ANTHECOLOGY AND ANDROMONOECY OF FERGANIA POLYANTHA (APIACEAE) IN THE FERGHANA VALLEY (UZBEKISTAN)

Аннотация
The andromonoecy and flowering biology of Fergania polyantha (Apiaceae), a rare endemic of the southern Fergana Valley (Uzbekistan), has been studied in detail for the first time. Its floral unit is a double (compound) open umbel. Three types of synflorescences were identified: a single terminal double umbel, a raceme of double umbels, and a panicle of double umbels. The species has two flower types: bisexual flowers (larger in size, with statistically significant differences in most studied traits) and staminate flowers (with reduced stylodia and stigmas). In simple umbels, bisexual flowers are peripheral, while staminate ones are located centrally. The species is xenogamous: the pollen-to-ovule ratio (P/O) in bisexual flowers ranges from 2,495 to 3,085. Bisexual flowers are strictly protandrous (male phase precedes female phase). The flowering of bisexual flowers lasts from 3 to 5 days, while in staminate flowers no more than a day. The flowering sequence of double umbels follows the "Libanotis intermedia" pattern, characterized by the absence of overlap between staminate and stigmatic phases in the flowers on shoots of different branching orders. The flowers are visited by insects from three orders: Hymenoptera, Diptera, and Lepidoptera. Potential and actual seed productivity is low: 164 to 1,590 ovules and 24 to 865 seeds per plant. We here discuss the adaptive significance of andromonoecy, the formation of a large number of pollen grains, intra- and interfloral protandry, and the strict sequence of umbel flowering on shoots of different branching orders to ensure xenogamous pollination of F. polyantha.
