New Data on the Taxonomy of the Weevil Subgenus Caucasoplinthus, Genus Plinthus (Coleoptera, Curculionidae)

Abstract

The taxonomic composition of the subgenus Caucasoplinthus Davidian, 1995 is revised. The immunis and granulosus groups are downgraded to subgroups of the silphoides and fallax groups, respectively; the voriseki subgroup is transferred from the fallax to the fausti group. Plinthus attilai Davidian et Savitsky, sp. n. and P. ljudae Davidian et Savitsky, sp. n. are described from Turkey and Abkhazia, respectively. New data on the taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of some little-known species are presented. The following new synonymy is established: Molytes vittatus Motschulsky, 1839 (= Meleus irroratus Reitter, 1884, syn. n., = Meleus faldermanni Faust, 1884, syn. n., = Meleus difficilis Faust, 1884, syn. n.).

Review of the Genus Hedyphanes Fischer von Waldheim, 1820 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Helopini) of Kazakhstan, Middle Asia, Iran and Afghanistan

Abstract

A taxonomic revision of the tenebrionid-beetle genus Hedyphanes Fischer von Waldheim, 1820 from Kazakhstan, Middle Asia, Iran and Afghanistan is presented. The history of the classification of this genus is described; the descriptions, synonymy, bibliography, data on the distribution and ecology, and a key to 19 species are given. Four new species are described: H. kadlecisp. n. (Iran: Ardabil Province), H. igorisp. n (Iran: Semnan Province), H. aalbuisp. n (Iran: Qum Province), and H. afghanicussp. n (Afghanistan: Herat Province). Hedyphanes tuxeni Kaszab, 1959 is recorded for Iran and H. kiritshenkoi is recorded for Uzbekistan for the first time The following new synonymies are established: Hedyphanes besseri Faldermann, 1837 = H. parvicollis Seidlitz, 1896, syn. n.; Hedyphanes seidlitzi Reitter, 1914 = H. albertus Reitter, 1922, syn. n., and Hedyphanes bodemeyeri Reitter, 1914 = H. gebieni Reitter, 1914, syn. n. Hedyphanes kuschkensis Kaszab, 1960 is interpreted as a subspecies: H. seidlitzi kuschkensis stat. n. Lectotypes of Hedyphanes koltzei Heyden, 1892, H. europs Reitter, 1914, and H. bodemeyeri Reitter, 1914 are designated.

Two New Species of the Genus Carabus Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera, Carabidae) from the South Caucasus

Abstract

Based on the material collected by the authors in Central and West Georgia, the Caucasus, in 2014–2017, Carabus (Archiplectes) zubovisp. n. from Kvemo Svaneti, belonging to the komarowi species-group, and Carabus (Tribax) shtavlerensissp. n. from Zemo Svaneti, belonging to the agnathus species-group, are described. The distribution of the new species is mapped.

Phylogenetic Signal in the Wing Shape in the Subfamily Dolichopodinae (Diptera, Dolichopodidae)

Abstract

Interspecific and sex-related variations in the wing shape of 22 species of the fly subfamily Dolichopodinae, family Dolichopodidae were analyzed using geometric morphometrics. Mapping morphometric traits onto phylogeny revealed a clear phylogenetic signal in the interspecific variation and sexual dimorphism of wing shape. In some cases, not too closely related species occupied the same portion of the morphometric space, indicating some degree of homoplasy. Interspecific variation was associated with an increased wing area due to both elongation and widening or only elongation of the wing. An increase in wing area was accompanied by extension of the posterior crossvein to the apical part of the wing. The variation in wing shape related to sexual dimorphism involved the same structures (the posterior crossvein and the apical part of CuA1), but variation associated with sexual dimorphism was distributed in fewer dimensions than interspecific variation. The allometric component of sexual dimorphism varied between species, and in most cases it was not the leading factor in wing shape variability.

Lamellicorn Beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea) of Manchuria (China): Fauna, Ecology, and Zoogeography

Abstract

The species composition and taxonomic structure of lamellicorn beetles of Northeast China are considered. A total of 317 species from 86 genera, 42 tribes, 18 subfamilies, and 6 families are known to occur in the fauna of Manchuria. Seven species are recorded from China for the first time: Trox scaber (Linnaeus, 1767), Glyptotrox ineptus (Balthasar, 1931), Aegialia (Psammoporus) kamtschatica Motschulsky, 1860, Aphodius (Acrossus) superatratus Nomura et Nakane, 1951, Aphodius (Chilothorax) grafi Reitter, 1901, Maladera spissigrada (Brenske, 1897), and Valgus hemipterus hemipterus (Linnaeus, 1758); in addition, 18 species are recorded as new to the fauna of Manchuria. Among 177, 219, 208 and 226 species recorded from the Manchurian part of Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning, 20, 29, 14 and 19 species are new to the region, respectively. The ecological and zoogeographical features of Scarabaeoidea in Manchuria are analyzed. Data on the trophic structure, phenology, and distribution of all the taxa are presented.

The granulosus subgroup of Plinthus is revised. Plinthus frivaldszkyi Davidian et Savitsky, sp. n. and P. mananauricus Davidian et Savitsky, sp. n. from the Caucasus are described. New data on the morphology and geographic distribution of P. granulosus Reitter, 1884, P. abdurakhmanovi Davidian, 1995, and P. kataevi Davidian, 1992 and a key to five species of the granulosus subgroup are presented.

World Catalogue of the Family Ratardidae (Lepidoptera, Cossoidea) with Description of a New Species from Thailand and Establishment of New Synonymy and a New Status for Ratarda javanica Roepke, 1937

Abstract

An illustrated catalogue is given of the family Ratardidae in the world fauna which includes 10 species from 3 genera. A new species, Callosiope elenae Yakovlev sp. n., is described from Lampang Province, Thailand. Externally, the new species differs well from the type species of the genus, C. banghaasi. The fore wing of C. elenae sp. n. has a pattern of alternating wide black bands against pure white background (in C. banghaasi, the fore wing is strongly darkened, without bands). The hind wing of C. elenae sp. n. shows a pattern of large dropshaped black smears at the wing edge and a more or less expressed spotted pattern in the discal and postdiscal areas (in C. banghaasi, the hind wing is completely black, with no pattern). A new synonymy: Ratarda marmorata Moore, 1879 = Ratarda guttifera Hering, 1925 syn. n. and a new status: Ratarda mora javanica Roepke, 1937 stat. n., are established. Ratarda excellens (Strand, 1917) is recorded in the fauna of Thailand for the first time.

On the Genus Megeremaeus Higgins et Woolley, 1965 (Acari, Oribatida, Megeremaeidae), with a Description of a New Species Megeremaeus sikhotealinus Ryabinin et Wu sp. n.

Abstract

A brief review of the Megeremaeus species of the world fauna is given, and the synonymy of Ctenobelba (Aokibelba) rameus (Wen et Zhao, 1993) comb. n. = C. (A.) polysetosa (Aoki et Yamamoto, 2000) syn. n. is established. A description of the new species Megeremaeus sikhotealinus sp. n., found in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains, is provided. The trichobothria in the new species are slightly expanded in the distal third, placed on a long stalk, and covered with small setulae. The interlamellar setae are barbed, apically blunt, and half as long as the trichobothria. The translamellar ridge is well developed in the lower basal part, and there is a thin ridge connecting the cusps of lamellae together and to the ends of the tutoria. The notogastral setae are covered with sparse hairs; many of these setae extend to or beyond the bases of the posterior setae. There are 2 pairs of anal setae. The discidium is pointed. Companion setae d on genua I–III are blunt, slightly expanded in the middle part, and covered with small setulae.
