Application of the GRACE satellite mission for solving geological and geographic problems

Tkachenko N., Lygin I.

Аннотация

In this paper we provide a literature review of the geological and geographic problems that were successfully solved via the application of the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission data. GRACE is a gravitational satellite mission whose purpose is the precise mapping of variations of the Earth’s gravity field. The data have high resolution, which provides the opportunity to solve many geological and geographical problems.

Evolution of the inversion megaswells of the Yenisei–Khatanga Basin

Unger A., Nikishin A., Kuzlyapina M., Afanasenkov A.

Аннотация

This paper presents a description of the Balakhna and Rassokha swells, which are located in the central part of the Yenisei–Khatanga Basin and are revealed by seismic and drilling data, as well as the results of a comparative analysis of their geological structure. The history of the formation of the swells is discussed in detail, starting from rift nucleation in the Late Permian–Early Triassic time and including the stages when growth of inversion structures intensified in the Middle Triassic, Late Jurassic, Early Cretaceous, and Cenozoic. Asynchronous development of these structures is established on the basis of paleoreconstruction analysis.

The provenance of terrigenous rocks of the basal horizons of the Uralides of the Baidarata Allochthon (Polar Urals) according to the U–Pb isotope age of detrital zircons

Sychev S., Ivleva A., Petrov S., Petrova M., Ershova V., Veselovskii R., Konnov A.

Аннотация

The U–Pb (LA–ICP–MS) age of detrital zircons from the Upper Cambrian–Lower Ordovician terrigenous rocks of the Baidarata Allochthon, which is located in the northern part of the Polar Urals, is determined. The analysis of the youngest zircon population indicates a broad occurrence of the Uralides in this area rather than Pre-Uralides, as was considered previously. The Bedamel island-arc rocks (rather than Timan orogen) were probably the major provenance for the studied sequences. The results of statistical processing of the U–Pb ages of zircons from coeval rocks of Arctic regions suggest similar provenances for the Baidarata Allochthon and Novaya Zemlya and Severnaya Zemlya archipelagoes.

The kinematics of the Baikal rift zone accommodation structures

Tevelev A., Fedorovsky V.

Аннотация

Rift systems are composed of a set of heterogeneous tectonic blocks that deform under regional extension concordantly, but individually. Such coordination is achieved due to development of evolving ensembles of deformation structures along the borders of the blocks; these structures accommodate in some way the discrepancies in the structural style between the separate domains of tension. Generally, the number of structural ensembles that segment the space of the rift zone is limited and each of them has its own trend of tectonic development. This article analyzes the segmentation and evolutionary patterns of the Baikal rift zone in terms of transfer and accommodation zones, which have been accepted recently as standard descriptions for the architecture of continental rifts.

Tailing dumps at the Krasnorechenskaya concentration mill (Primorskii krai, Russia): Geochemistry and mineralogy

Tarasenko I., Kharitonova N., Zin’kov A., Ovodova E., Korzun A.

Аннотация

This study presents the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of tailing dumps at the Krasnorechenskaya concentration mill (Primorskii krai, Russia). Primary ore minerals and newly forming mineral assemblages were also investigated. According to the obtained data, the possible reserves of the major elements accumulated in these tailings were estimated. It was shown that the tailing dumps at the Krasnorechenskaya concentration mill are potentially promising for secondary recovery. The tailing sediment has natural geochemical stratification and the specific correlations of elements are typical for each selected layer.

A retrospective analysis of the impact of climate change on groundwater resources

Grinevskiy S., Pozdniakov S.

Аннотация

Based on the actual meteorological data that characterize statistically significant changes in the air temperature and the amount of precipitation in the southwest of the Moscow artesian basin, the conditions that form the water balance and groundwater recharge are modeled. The comparison of the calculated longterm average values for the previous (1965–1988) and recent (1989–2012) periods made it possible to estimate the climate changes in the elements of water balance and groundwater recharge. Based on the maps of longterm average groundwater recharge for these periods, which were constructed using the results of modeling, the estimation of the change in natural resources of groundwater in the territory was performed, showing an increase of 9% (780000 m3/day).

Subsea uplifts origin of the Rugozerskaya bay and the Great Salma channel (Kandalaksha Bay)

Terekhina Y., Tokarev M., Shevchenko N., Kozupitsa N.

Аннотация

The origin of the subsea uplifts of the Rugozerskaya bay and the Great Salma strait is discussed in this article. It was found that the present-day bottom surface of the investigation area imitates the post-glacial terrain. This was determined by accumulative glacial formations that were emulated with post-glacial sedimentation processes. All modern bottom uplifts are similar to the ancient post-glacial terrain. Most presentday bottom surface depressions are similar to post-glacial surface inequalities, but the configuration of modern closed kettles could be changed via glacial–marine sedimentation and other processes.

The formation of hydrochemical indicators for the pay zones in the Surgut arch oil fields

Anisimov L., Kireeva T., Bankin K., Krasnyashchikh O., Lyamina L.

Аннотация

The causes of the spatial variation in the hydrochemical indicators of groundwater in several oil fields in the Surgut arch of West Siberia are considered. On the basis of statistical processing of the database, including several thousand analyses of groundwater, histograms of the distribution of mineralization and concentrations of Ca2+ and HCO3 ions through the main pay horizons of the fields are constructed. The influence of deep (hydrothermal) water inflow on the formation of the chemical composition of the stratum waters of oil fields, which is exhibited by an increasing content of HCO3 ion with depth, is substantiated.

Temperature deformations of frozen soils caused by rapid changes in temperature

Volokhov S., Nikitin I., Lavrov D.

Аннотация

The results of the study of the temperature deformations for different types of frozen soils due to rapid temperature variations in cooling–heating cycles have been described. The difference in the patterns of the temperature deformation for step-like and single variations of temperature has been established. The dependence of the temperature deformation of frozen soil on the soil type, the total moisture, and the number of the cooling–heating cycles has been studied.
