Abstract
Review of the monograph by G.P.Tarasov and V.Yu.Smirnov "The Road to Madrid. The USSR and the Preparations for the Madrid Peace Conference on the Middle East (1985–1991)". Analyzes the efforts of Soviet diplomacy to create a legal mechanism for the peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Examines the historical context of the Middle East conflict, the role of UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338, the process of preparing the 1991 Madrid Conference and its outcomes. Emphasizes the relevance of the Madrid paradigm for the current conflict settlement.
