Changes in soil microbiota under the effect of acrylonitrile in a model experiment
Abstract
A laboratory experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of acrylonitrile (20, 200, and 2000 mg/kg soil) on the abundance and structure of soil microbial community. The results of direct inoculation showed that acrylonitrile at 200 mg/kg stimulated the development of nitrile-utilizing prokaryotes, whereas at 2000 mg/kg it inhibited all test groups of microorganisms, including nitrile- and amide-utilizing bacteria. According to real-time PCR data, representatives of α- and ß-Proteobacteria were the most labile members of the soil microbial community, while Bacteroidetes and Fungi proved to be highly resistant to the effect of the pollutant.



The humus index: A promising tool for environmental monitoring
Abstract
The European morpho-functional classification of humus forms, based on the detailed description of the morphology of organogenic soil horizons, has been applied to the assessment of soil biological properties in the zone of impact from a copper smelter in the southern taiga of the Middle Urals. It has been shown that, as the distance from the polluter decreases, zoogenic mull-type humus forms are replaced by nonzoogenic mor-type forms. The shift in the spectrum of humus forms along the pollution gradient is closely connected with increase in the thickness (stock) of forest litter and reduction in the abundance of large soil saprophages. The high information value and low labor intensity of measurements, compared to other methods, allow us to recommend the humus index (the ordinal number of a humus form in their ordered total list) as a tool for environmental monitoring and assessment.



Responses of plant functional groups to natural nitrogen fertility on an alpine grassland in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau
Abstract
Species distribution is often closely associated with soil nutrients in terrestrial ecosystem. In contrast to most manipulated N (nitrogen) experimental studies, there are few observation experiments examining the distribution of species or functional groups along a natural soil N gradient. Alpine meadows with higher soil spatial heterogeneity at fine scale, which have a large gradient in soil N gradient, provides an ideal system to examine the distribution of species or functional groups. Here we used redundancy analysis (RDA) to examine the relationships between soil and plant properties in northeast of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau over two years. The results showed the relative biomass of forbs increased, while those of legumes and grasses decreased with the soil N availability. This suggests that legumes and grasses had stronger tolerance to infertile soils than forbs, which may due to the N2-fixed for legumes and high nutrient use efficiency for grasses. Furthermore, the positive significant relationships between the percentage of legumes biomass and N: P (phosphorus) ratio were found in the whole community and non-legumes, confirming the presence of legumes improved the vegetation N status even for non-legumes.



Salinity tolerance of macrozoobenthic taxa in small rivers of the Lake Elton basin
Abstract
The results of studies on the distribution of macrozoobenthic taxa along the water mineralization gradient in the small salt rivers of the Lake Elton basin are presented. The optimum and tolerance intervals for dominant species have been determined. Species with the highest tolerance to the high-salinity aquatic environment have been identified.



The influence of climate change on the dates of bird arrival to the Ilmen State Reserve (Southern Urals)
Abstract
The results of long-term observations (1983–2013) on the dates of arrival of migratory birds to the Ilmen State Reserve are presented. Based on their analysis, it is conclude that (1) there is no significant positive trend of spring temperatures in the territory of the reserve, and (2) an earlier arrival of the majority of bird species is not observed, unlike in Europe. The arrival has shifted to earlier dates in the Common Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), White Wagtail (Motacilla alba), and Black Kite (Milvus migrans). On the other hand, the arrival of the Tree Pipit (Anthus trivialis) is observed later than usual. Multiple regression analysis has shown that the arrival dates of most species that nest in the reserve are determined by the temperature regime of spring months in their nesting area.



Plasticity in metamorphic traits of Rana kukunoris tadpoles: The interactive effects of food level and rearing temperature
Abstract
Larval amphibians are particularly likely to encounter variation in rearing temperature and resource availability due to variation in aquatic breeding habitats. In this study, plasticity in growth rates, larval mass, larval period, and size at metamorphosis were examined in Rana kukunoris Nikolskii, 1918 under different combinations of temperature and food level. Larval period and larval body mass was sensitive to food level, and varied with temperature. Tadpoles metamorphosed at an older age at low temperature than those reared at warm temperature. Food level was a significant affect on larval period at low temperature, but not at warm temperature. Mass was heavier for tadpoles reared at low temperatures than those reared at warm temperatures. The effect of food level depended on temperature, because larvae reared at low temperature that were offered a high food level achieved a larger size than larvae offered a low food level, but this did not occur at warm temperature. Therefore, we suggest that high food availability at low temperature prolonged developmental periods, thus larvae are larger as metamorphs than those reared at warm temperatures.



Mating patterns in three Bufo andrewsi populations at different latitude
Abstract
Body size-dependent mating pattern is thought to a consequence of the sexual selection on phenotypic characters. In the view, we investigated the mating patterns in Bufo andrewsi from three populations at different latitude in three Nature Reserves (i.e. Wanglang, Yele and Fengtongzhai) in China from early- March to late-May 2013 and 2014. The results showed that average body size did not differ significantly between amplectant and non-amplectant males within each population. We found a significantly positive relationship in body size between the amplectant males and amplectant females in Wanglang population, but not in Qiqiao and Yele populations. The strength of size-dependent mating was not correlated with the malebiased operational sex ratios (OSRs), suggesting that intensity of male-male competition at nights do not result in variation in size-dependent mating patterns in B. andrewsi among populations.



Energy and immune parameters of northern red-backed voles (Clethrionomys rutilus) at different population densities in the Kolyma River basin
Abstract
Several parameters of energy and immune homeostasis in immature red-backed voles at different phases of the population cycle have been evaluated and compared over three cycles (2002–2009). It has been found that a specific morphophysiological type of population is characteristic of each phase of the cycle. The values of all physiological parameters recorded at high and low population densities significantly differ from each other, with their values being usually intermediate at a medium density. The level of most energy and immune parameters at the phase of population peak corresponds to that observed under stress. Supposedly, stress contributes to suppression of reproduction and increased mortality of the voles.



Changes of skull size in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) during the second half of the 20th century in the Middle Urals and neighboring regions
Abstract
Based on 30-year collection of red fox skulls from the Middle Urals, the north of Kurgan oblast, and the south of Tyumen oblast, an increase in average values of craniometrics characters has been revealed in both young and adult animals of both sexes. This increase shows a weak but statistically significant correlation with annual average temperature. The rates of increase in different characters are not equal.
