Abstract
The article is devoted to theoretical bases of the participating approach and the specifics of its application in the studying of childhood as a social phenomenon. Backgrounds of the participating approach are marked. The projection of this approach on the space of childhood is emphasized. The importance of research of children's daily life, in which they are recognized as «experts», is approved. Subjectivity, activity, social competence of childhood, ability to engage children in society are affirmed. The need for exploring childhood through children themselves and for them is indicated; the approach to children as participants and co-researchers is proved. The problems of the participating approach in the studying of children are designated.
