Author Guidelines

The guidelines for authors are based on the Council of Scientific Editors' White Paper on Publication Integrity in Scientific Journal Publications, 2012 Update and ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals, December 2016.

Goals and objectives of the journal (description of the journal)

The purpose of the journal is to promote the development of a complex of historical disciplines as an important section of humanities, by highlighting and discussing the results of fundamental and applied research, as well as accumulating experience in using the results of current scientific activity for the development of Russian and world historical science. The journal is designed to comply with the policy of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science of the Russian Federation, namely: to contribute to the creation of an information space aimed at identifying the most pressing problems and requests of the scientific historical community, covering the process of developing effective technologies and methods for solving them.

Objectives of the scientific journal “History: Facts and Symbols”:

  1. Publication of new scientific articles, innovative developments, historical documents and reviews of current scientific publications;
  2. Formation of the scientific community by attracting academics and scholars from Russia and other countries to publish articles in the journal;
  3. Raising the level of awareness of representatives of the academic community in Russia and the world language community;
  4. Increasing the creative and publication activity of young researchers;
  5. Familiarization of the readership with the latest achievements in the field of historical studies;
  6. Support for graduate students and doctoral students in testing the results of their dissertation researches;
  7. Integration of Russian historical studies into the global academic space;
  8. Increasing the competitiveness of the Russian historical school in the global academic community;
  9. Contribute to the implementation of the main provisions of the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation.
  10. Contribute to the development of a positive scientific and partner image of Russian historical studies in the global academic and information space.

 

  • The journal accepts original articles, reviews, reviews for publication.
  • The journal accepts materials from graduate students, doctoral students, specialists and experts in the field.
  1. Recommendations to the author before submitting the article

Submission of an article to the journal “History: Facts and Symbols” implies that:

- the article has not been published previously in another journal;

- the article is not under consideration in another journal;

- all co-authors agree with the publication of the current version of the article.

Before submitting an article for consideration make sure that the file(s) contains all the necessary information in Russian and English, the sources of information contained in the figures and tables are indicated, and all citations are formatted correctly.

The title page of the article contains (in Russian and English):

1) Name of the author(s)

Authors are people who have been identified by the scholar team as major contributors to the work reported and who have agreed to take responsibility for their work. In addition to being responsible for his part of the work, the author must be able to indicate which of his co-authors is responsible for other parts of the work.

The journal “History: Facts and Symbols” accepts the following authorship criteria:

  1. Substantial contribution to study conception and design, data collection, or data analysis and interpretation.
  2. Preparation of the article or its critical revision in terms of significant intellectual content.
  3. Final approval of the article version for publication.

The list of authors does not include people who are not the authors of the article. The names of people who are not authors but have provided other support are listed in the Acknowledgments section.

In Russian, when indicating the authors of an article, the surname should be indicated before the initials of the name and patronymic (Ivanov P.S., Petrov S.I., Sidorov I.P.).

In English, when indicating the authors of an article, the format “Name, patronymic initial, surname” (Ivan I. Ivanov) is used. Last names in English must be indicated in accordance with the foreign passport or as it was indicated in previously published articles. If the author does not have a foreign passport and/or publications, the BSI standard must be used to transliterate the last name and first name.

2) Information about the author(s)

This section lists the title, position, and other regalia. The e-mail and full postal address of the responsible author are also indicated here.

3) Affiliation of the author(s)

Affiliation includes the following data: full official name of the organization, full postal address (including zip code, city and country). Authors must indicate all places of employment relevant to the study.

If authors from different institutions took part in the preparation of the article, it is necessary to indicate the affiliation of each author with a specific institution using a superscript.

The official English name of the institution is required for the block of information in English.

4) Title of the article

The title of the article in Russian must correspond to the content of the article.

The English-language name must be correct from the point of view of the English language, while the meaning must fully correspond to the Russian-language name.

5) Abstract

Recommended length of structured abstract: 200-250 words. The abstract contains the following sections: Purpose, Methods, Results, Conclusion.

The annotations should not include newly introduced terms, abbreviations (except for well-known ones), or references to the literature.

6) Keywords

5-7 words on the topic of the article. It is advisable that keywords complement the abstract and title of the article.

7) Thanks

This section indicates all sources of funding for the study, as well as thanks to people who participated in the work on the article, but are not its authors. Participation in the work on the article implies: recommendations for improving the study, providing space for research, departmental control, receiving financial support, single types of analysis, providing reagents/patients/animals/other materials for research.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with each of the following items, and submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines may be returned to the authors.

  • The journal uses the Vancouver citation format, which involves citing the source in square brackets and then citing the sources in the list of references in the order of mention. The page is indicated inside brackets, separated by a comma and a space after the source number: [6, p. 8]

     

    The list of references includes only peer-reviewed sources (articles from scientific journals and monographs) mentioned in the text of the article. It is not advisable to include in the list of references abstracts, dissertations, textbooks, teaching aids, GOSTs, information from websites, statistical reports, articles in socio-political newspapers, websites and blogs. If you need to cite such information, you should include the source information in a footnote.

     

    When describing a source, you should indicate its DOI if you can find it (for foreign sources you can do this in 95% of cases).

     

    Links to articles accepted for publication but not yet published should be marked with the words “to appear”; Authors must obtain written permission to refer to such documents and confirmation that they have been accepted for publication. Information from unpublished sources must be marked as “unpublished data/documents,” and authors must also obtain written confirmation for the use of such materials.

     

    In references to articles from journals, the year of publication, volume and number of the journal, and page numbers must be indicated.

     

    All authors must be included in the description of each source.

     

    Links must be verified, output data checked on the official website of journals and/or publishers.

     

    A translation of the bibliography into English is required. After the description of the Russian-language source, at the end of the link there must be an indication of the language of the work: (In Russ.).

     

    To transliterate names and surnames of authors and journal titles, the BSI standard should be used.

     If possible, authors can send a cover letter with recommendations from the employer.

     

    The average percentage of manuscripts rejected (rejection rate) is 25%, determined by the quality of submitted materials and does not depend on any other factors.

     

    Information about custom articles: custom articles are not accepted for consideration. The author is obliged to notify the editors that the submitted manuscript is of a custom nature.
