Abstract
This article examines the varieties of the historical novel, using as examples the works of the Vietnamese writer Nguyen Xuan Khanh (1933-2021), specifically "Ho Quy Ly" (2000) and "Mother Goddess of Mountains and Forests" (2005). These novels have received limited attention in Russian and English-language literary criticism. The study employs V. Malkina’s concept of subgenres within the historical novel as its theoretical framework. By applying comparative historical and structural methods, the article identifies the subgenre of each of the aforementioned novels. The analysis concludes that V. Malkina’s system for categorizing historical novel varieties is applicable to modern Vietnamese literature, as exemplified by the works of Nguyen Xuan Khanh.
