Abstract
The purpose of the research is to study the mechanism of creating a serial meme and classify their types, depending on the principle of their creation. The article introduces the concept of serial meme and outlines the reasons for its inventing. It also describes the structural model of a serial meme and traces the phases of its existence. The authors introduce the concept of a zero meme, which is an initial version of a meme, whose altering lead to creating a range of related memes (a meme series). Thus, a viral nature of this genre is exhibited. The authors undertake the method of meme deconstruction and conduct a qualitative content analysis to boil down four serial memes to their meta seme and extract the conceptual core of the series. The authors conclude that carnivalization of reality underlies the process of zero meme creation. However, numerous variations of a zero meme lead to the loss of its meta seme. This phenomenon can be observed in parodies of a meme, samples of meme stylisation and the amalgamation of memes.
