Abstract

chronic inflammatory periodontal diseases, particularly in patients with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, lead to progressive tissue destruction and reduced quality of life. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of low-dose corticosteroids in the regeneration of periodontal tissues in such patients. This double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial included patients with autoimmune conditions and moderate to severe periodontitis. The test group received low doses of prednisolone (5 mg) combined with standard periodontal therapy, while the control group received a placebo. Outcomes were assessed through clinical, biochemical, and immunohistochemical methods, including radiography and patient-reported surveys. Results indicated a significant reduction in pocket depth and inflammatory markers in the test group, highlighting the anti-inflammatory effects of corticosteroids and improvements in bone tissue condition. Conclusions confirm that low-dose corticosteroids can be effectively applied in periodontal treatment for patients with autoimmune disorders, promoting tissue recovery and enhancing quality of life.
