Radiation Chemistry

Features of the molecular–topological structure of γ-irradiated powdered tetrafluoroethylene–perfluoro(propyl vinyl ether) copolymer

Allayarov S.R., Ol’khov Y.A., Loginova N.N., Sadikov I.I., Tashmetov M.Y.

Abstract

With the use of thermomechanical spectrometry in two modes, coaxial, when the load application vector is coplanar with the compacting pressure vector (semicrystalline copolymer) during the measurement of the deformation of a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene with perfluoro(propyl vinyl ether), and mutually perpendicular (completely amorphous copolymer), it has been established that the axial compression of the copolymer brought its topological structure to an absolutely anisotropic state. After γ-irradiation, the semicrystalline structure of the copolymer was retained regardless of the radiation dose. The minimum values of the glass transition temperature of the amorphous block and the degree of crystallinity were observed in the copolymer irradiated to a dose of 150 kGy. The molecular weight distribution functions of interjunction chains in the networks of the amorphous blocks of the initial copolymer and its γ-irradiated analogs are bimodal.

Radiation polymerization of methacrylates controlled by a chain transfer catalyst

Roshchupkin V.P., Berezin M.P., Kiryukhin D.P.

Abstract

The effect of γ-radiation dose and chain transfer catalyst on polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and copolymerization of MMA with hydroxyethyl methacrylate or triethylene glycol dimethacrylate has been investigated. The addition of 5 × 10−4−10−3 mol/L of bis[(difluoroboryl) isopropylpyridine dimethylglyoximato]cobalt(II) (Co(II)) makes it possible to produce macromonomers MMn== bearing terminal double bonds and having a degree polymerization of n = 2−40 and a polydispersity index of 1.05−1.15. It has been found that the degree polymerization of the macromonomers increases with the increasing γ-radiation dose and monomer conversion through the mechanism of the reversible β-cleavage of the terminal unit: Rk + MMn= ↔ MMk+1= + Rn-1 followed by the living polymerization of both radicals. This reaction may compete with the catalytic chain transfer reaction and have a significant effect on the evolution of the molecular weight characteristics of the macromonomers during the course of MMA (co)polymerization.

Generation of hydrogen by hydroreactive compositions with γ-irradiated aluminum

Milinchuk V.K., Klinshpont E.R., Belozerov V.I.

Abstract

The kinetics of hydrogen generation by heterogeneous hydroreactive compositions with aluminum, which was preliminarily γ-irradiated in air, held in aqueous solutions at room temperature, and annealed at a high temperature, was studied. Changes in the hydrogen generation kinetics depending on the γ-radiation dose, the composition of aqueous solution, and the temperature are caused by the conversion of aluminum oxide coatings, which should be taken into account in the prediction of the corrosion resistance of structural materials under the conditions of exposures at nuclear power plants.

Radiation synthesis of tetrafluoroethylene telomers in chlorosilanes and their use for modification of aluminoborosilicate glass fabric

Kichigina G.A., Kushch P.P., Kiryukhin D.P.

Abstract

The kinetics of radiation-initiated telomerization of tetrafluoroethylene in dichlorodimethylsilane and chlorotrimethylsilane have been studied, and the molecular structure and properties of the telomers have been revealed. It has been shown that the introduction of ~3.5 wt % product telomer into aluminoborosilicate glass fabric gives a fluorinated glass-reinforced polymer material with good hydrophobicity.

Effect of γ-irradiation and thermal annealing on the molecular–topological structure of a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro(propyl vinyl ether)

Olkhov Y.A., Allayarov S.R., Allayarov R.S., Dixon D.A.

Abstract

The molecular–topological structure of a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro(propyl vinyl ether) subjected to γ-irradiation and thermal annealing has been studied for the first time with the use of thermomechanical spectrometry. The pseudonetwork structure of the copolymer contains an amorphous block (interjunction chains) and crystalline segments (branching points). The diblock amorphous and crystalline structure with a crystal structure fraction of 0.21 transformed into an almost completely amorphous structure with a crystallite fraction of 0.06 after the irradiation of the copolymer at a dose of 600 kGy. Thermal annealing at 483 K formed a new structure: a high-temperature amorphous block.

Spectral-luminescence and quantum-chemical study of the anionic forms of 5-fluorouracil

Ostakhov S.S., Sultanbaev M.V., Ovchinnikov M.Y., Kayumov R.R., Khursan S.L.

Abstract

A spectral-luminescence study of neutral (pH 7) and alkaline (pH 11 and 14) aqueous solutions of the anticancer drugs 5-fluorouracil (FU) and tegafur has been performed. The fluorescence spectra of the N3- and N1-centered anions of 5-fluorouracil, its dianion, and the tegafur monoanion with emission maxima at wavelengths (λem) of 358, 372, 366, and 358 nm and photoluminescence quantum yields (φ) of 11.2 × 10–4, 35.1 × 10–4, 26.5 × 10–4, and 8.6 × 10–4, respectively, have been recorded for the first time. The fluorescence characteristics of the FU anionic forms have been related to the magnetic shielding constant as one of the criteria of aromaticity.

Abstract

Spectral, luminescent and time-resolved characteristics of 2,5-dibenzylidenecyclopentanone and its symmetrical derivatives (bis(N,N-diethylamino-), dimethoxy-, tetramethoxy-, dimethylthio-, and bis-18- crown-6 derivative) have been studied in media of different polarity (cyclohexane, toluene, acetonitrile, DMSO, and methanol) at room temperature. The absorption maximum of dibenzylidenecyclopentanone shifts bathochromically by 15 nm with an increase in polarity of the medium (cyclohexane–methanol). The introduction of electron-donating substituents in the aromatic rings of dibenzylidenecyclopentanone also results in a bathochromic shift of the absorption maximum by 100–130 nm in the media of different polarity and shifts the fluorescence maximum by 130 nm relative to the maximum of the dimethoxy derivative. Upon laser irradiation of oxygen-free solutions of dibenzylidenecyclopentanone and its tetramethoxy- and bis-18-crown-6 derivatives in acetonitrile, the triplet state with a half-life time of 0.3–1 μs is generated. For dimethoxy-, dimethylthio-, tetramethoxy-, and bis-18-crown-6 derivatives of dibenzylidenecyclopentanone, the isomers with a lifetime of ~50 ms are formed.

Influence of alkanethiols on fluorescence blinking of InP@ZnS colloidal quantum dots

Gak V.Y., Tovstun S.A., Spirin M.G., Brichkin S.B., Razumov V.F.

Abstract

Luminescence decay curves have been measured for InP@ZnS colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) synthesized at different ratios between 1-octanethiol and 1-dodecanethiol. The luminescence lifetime distributions reflecting the ratios between the on, off, and grey states of CQDs have been calculated. With an increase in the portion of 1-octanethiol, the distribution is shifted toward the on states, which almost completely suppresses fluorescence blinking at all detection wavelengths.

Abstract

The effect of pressure in a plasma reactor on the synthesis of mixtures of H2O2 and ClO2- has been studied. The yield of oxidants, selectivity for chlorites, the rate of the process, and its energy consumption have been treated as optimization parameters. Functional dependences of the optimal time of the plasma treatment of NaCl solutions on the reactor pressure with respect to parameters, such as the process selectivity and chlorite yield, have been determined.

Conversion of hydrocarbon gases in dielectric barrier discharge in the presence of water

Kudryashov S.V., Ryabov A.Y., Ochered’ko A.N.

Abstract

The conversion of C1–C4 hydrocarbons into gaseous and liquid products in a dielectric barrier discharge plasma in the presence of water has been studied. The formation of a deposit on the electrode surface is prevented by introducing water in the liquid state into a gaseous hydrocarbon stream, a finding that has been confirmed by IR spectroscopic study of the electrode surface. Hydrogen and C2+ hydrocarbons have been detected among the gaseous products of conversion, the liquid products being represented by C6–C10+ alkanes. The total liquid products have amounted to 13.4, 26.0, or 36.6% for the methane, propane, or n-butane conversion, respectively. A 10% propane or butane admixture to methane increases the yield of the liquid products to make 22.0 and 31.7% for the methane–propane and the methane–butane mixture, respectively.

Experimental study of gasification of vacuum residue in metal melt by alternating reactor feeding with carbonaceous feedstock and oxidant

Babaritskii A.I., Bibikov M.B., Deminskii M.A., Demkin S.A., Korobtsev S.V., Krotov M.F., Potapkin B.V., Smirnov R.V., Cheban’kov F.N.

Abstract

Processes occurring in a metal melt during plasma-assisted melt gasification of carbonaceous feedstock have been studied in the mode of alternating feeding the reactor with the carbonaceous feedstock and oxidant. Vacuum residue was used as an oxygen-free carbonaceous material, and air and steam were used as an oxidant. The results of the study show that by alternating the carbonaceous-feedstock pyrolysis step and the step of carbon oxidation in the metal melt, it is possible to produce synthesis gas with any desired H2/CO ratio.
