Abstract
In a brief review of the history of the development of refrigeration technology and the related history of the use of refrigerants, the author examined some characteristics of classical refrigerants used at the end of the 19th century. (Table 1). Among them, from a thermodynamic point of view, ammonia was the best, but for safety reasons, air and carbon dioxide were preferred to use in ship refrigeration plants.
