Abstract

In 46 women out of 136 (mean age 48.0 ± 2.3 years) who were operated on for a nodular goiter, a pericardial effusion and elevated serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were detected before the operation. After the operation, as the volume of hydropericardium increased, an increase in the serum cytokine content was observed with a direct correlation (r = 0.39; р<0.05) between TNF-α and the volume of effusion in the pericardial cavity.
