Harmonic analysis of the kinematic error in a planetary roller screw
Abstract
By kinematic analysis of a planetary roller screw and analysis of the relative amplitudes and phase shifts of the harmonics of its kinematic error as a function of their relative frequencies, additional requirements may be imposed on the manufacture and operation of the screw components so as to reduce the kinematic error and increase the precision.

Non-destructive testing of residual stresses by magnetic methods under conditions of simple stressing
Abstract
We have shown how crucial it is to determine the residual stresses (RS) at the stages of the product life cycle by means of the non-destructive testing (NDT) magnetic methods and to create computational algorithms and models. The experimental results of the RS in rod-shaped specimens after the 3-point-bending by magnetic-noise analysis and coercive force measurement are proved as being topical. The interrelations between the value of the change undergone by magnetic characteristics that are measured by the NDT magnetic methods and the value of the axial RS resulted from modeling by finite element method are revealed.

Properties of thick galvanic steel coatings
Abstract
The properties of thick steel coatings applied galvanically with mechanical action in different conditions in an electrolyte flux are investigated; the electrolyte is based on iron chloride. On the basis of the results, the utility of this process in repairing large and expensive worn components is assessed.

Stress–strain state of the valve spring in an auto engine during plastic hardening
Abstract
A method of increasing the life of highly loaded compression springs is proposed. The stress–strain state of the spring in plastic hardening is investigated. The required hardening load and geometric parameters of the spring are determined.

Using a tool with wear-resistant coatings in transverse cutting and thread cutting
Abstract
The influence of multilayer wear-resistant coatings on the contact processes and the thermal state of the tool in the transverse cutting and thread cutting of workpieces is studied. The effectiveness of cutters with the proposed multilayer coatings is demonstrated.

Quantum-mechanical modeling of chip deformation and failure
Abstract
An atomic approach to chip deformation and failure in cutting is outlined. The relation of the shear strength and the type of chip to the energy characteristics of the crystal lattice, its packing-defect energy, and the latent heat of fusion is established. The constancy of the shear with variation in the cutting conditions is related to the limiting dislocation density and the formation of an amorphous–liquid state.

Surface roughness in final turning: Development of an adequate empirical model
Abstract
A new method is proposed for empirical modeling. In this approach, the empirical model is improved by the introduction of data from theoretical modeling and experiment design. Comparison of the traditional empirical model and the proposed model shows that the latter is characterized by higher precision, over large ranges of the relevant factors.

Patent activity of high-tech enterprises in the Republic of Udmurtia
Abstract
The patent activity of high-tech enterprises in the Republic of Udmurtia is analyzed. The strategies adopted at those enterprises for the legal protection of industrial property are evaluated by analysis of the patents secured in the past fifteen years.

Design of flexible manufacturing systems on the basis of CAx software and virtual modeling
Abstract
Structural synthesis of flexible manufacturing systems for the machining of batches of parts and subassemblies at the preliminary design (technical proposal) stage is considered, on the basis of CAx software and virtual modeling of the control system. This is the key stage of design, since the structural synthesis of the flexible manufacturing system largely determines the economic viability of the design as a whole.

Coordinating the motion of a robot and the workpiece
Abstract
The benefits of coordinated motion are considered. A method of determining the initial point of the positioning unit is proposed. A relation is established between the directional vectors of the positioning unit’s coordinate system and the Euler angles of the robot’s coordinate system, which are used in adjusting the coordinated motion.

Cutting-system dynamics
Abstract
The attractive sets formed in the vicinity of equilibrium (asymptotically stable orbital limiting cycles, two-dimensional invariant tori, and chaotic attractors) are analyzed. The bifurcations of the system in parameter space and the space of control parameters are considered. General laws of stability loss of the equilibrium in a cutting system are outlined.

Internal grinding of thermoprotective rubber coatings
Abstract
The internal abrasive machining of thermoprotective rubber coatings with constant retaining force on the grinding wheel is studied, theoretically and experimentally. A model of rubber failure in abrasive machining is proposed on the basis of the work of a single abrasive grain in contact with the machined surface. A relation is established between the components of the grinding force and the normal and tangential contact stresses at the working surfaces of a single grain of the wheel.

Monitoring the yield of a borehole neutron generator
Abstract
In mining, it is important to improve the precision of geophysical instruments in mineral prospecting, especially in the exploration of oil and gas fields. The possibility of creating instruments for monitoring the neutron yield of a borehole neutron generator in neutron–neutron logging systems is considered. One possibility is to employ detectors based on natural diamonds, which are a valuable resource. Their use in hightech geophysical instruments for prospecting may be regarded as a valuable step in the efficient utilization of natural resources, which is an important goal at this time. Experience shows that Russian-made diamond detectors of the proposed design are satisfactory replacements for the instruments currently used to monitor the yield of a borehole neutron generator in neutron–neutron logging systems. Tests of the detectors in the AINK-43M pulsed neutron–neutron logging system demonstrate the improved productivity and precision of the measurement system.
