Discussions on the women’s issue during the First Kurultai of the Crimean Tatars
Kemal E.R.
Abstract

During the First Kurultai many important changes took place in the Crimean Tatar society, particularly concerning the women’s issue. This topic worried many people, because the equalization of Crimean women’s rights with men was a revolutionary decision not only for Muslim, but also for the majority of European nations. Nevertheless, at that time there were many opponents of this change, as not all decisions made by the Kurultai were correlated with the norms of religion and local traditions. Crimean Tatar society was split, and the agenda was filled with acute issues that lay in the religious and social planes: whether a woman can attend a mosque, whether a girl can receive a full education, whether a woman has the right to freedom of movement, how a Muslim woman should dress, what conditions men should observe in case of polygamy. Such topical issues were touched upon during the 18th and 19th sessions of the Kurultai, where Noman Chelebidzhikhan, Asan Sabri Aivazov, Shefika Gasprinskaya and many others expressed their opinions. In the preparation of the article we used transcripts of the meetings of the Kurultai, memoirs of famous figures of that period, newspapers.

Sources about the Battle of Molodi
Komarov O.V.
Abstract

The article studies the sources about the Crimean Khan’s campaign to Moscow in July-August of 1572 and about the battles that took place there. These sources are represented by a large number of military documents and chronicles written in the 16th–18th centuries. Their texts have been studied and compared. Comparison of sources with each other allowed us to separate out the array of unreliable rumors and distortions. Service documents of the military department are designated as the main sources. The view from the Crimean side is represented by the letter of the Khan. False rumors are also of research interest, as they reflect the view of contemporaries on this war. The involvement of topographical data allows to clarify the places of battles and routes of troops movement. The article is intended to help researchers of the 1572 campaign.

Christians of eastern Taurica as part of the Golden Horde. Summary of Archaeological Sources
Maiko V.V.
Abstract

The article sets out the main categories of archaeological sources that make it possible to reconstruct the processes that took place in the Christian communities of cities and rural settlements of eastern Taurika during their stay in the Crimean ulus of the Golden Horde. Based on this, the chronological framework for this region of the peninsula can be determined from the third quarter of the 13th to the end of the third quarter of the 14th century, when after the Solkhat wars there is a final delimitation of the spheres of influence of the Genoese Republic and the Crimean Golden Horde ulus. We analyze those changes in the historical topography of Sugdeja and Bosporus, which made it possible to transform the provincial-Byzantine city into a place where Eastern and Christian urban planning traditions were surprisingly combined. Christian churches are considered, most of which, which have survived to this day, were built in the second half of the 13th century. Attention is drawn to the funeral rite and Christian objects of material culture. It is concluded that the interest of the Golden Horde administration in the development of eastern Taurika as an important trading transshipment point contributed to the economic prosperity of these territories and amazing tolerance towards its inhabitants.

Yesil Jami Mosque in the documents of the Tauride Muslim Spiritual Board (30–40s of the 19th century)
Seytumerov S.S.
Abstract

One of the most famous architectural monuments of Bakhchisarai – the Yesil Jami Mosque, after the events of the 80s of the 18th century, was abandoned, without parishioners, and needed repairs. Archival documents of the Tauride Muslim Spiritual Board for the 30–40s of the 19th century, published statistical data and indicated that one of the probable reasons for the desolation of the Jami was the emigration of a significant number of Muslim residents from Bakhchisarai and the settlement of the city by the Christian population, as a result, the absence of a jamaat at the mosque, responsible for maintaining the Yesil Jami building in proper condition.

Information about the Nogai and the Crimean Tatars in the work of the Ottoman historian of the 17th century Husein Hezarfen
Shalak M.E.
Abstract

The presented article is devoted to a detailed analysis of the work of the Ottoman historian and jurist Huseyn Hezarfen «Summary of the laws of the Ottoman Dynasty», who worked on it from 1673 to 1683. At the same time, the author provides us with information not only contemporary to him, but also from the recent and even distant past. The main interest was in obtaining historical facts related to the history of the Crimean Khanate and the Nogais who lived within its borders. Thus, Hezarfen showed changes in the attitude of the Ottoman dignitaries towards the Crimean khans, starting from the time of Sahib-Giray and Sultan Suleiman, to the modern author Janibek-Giray and Hassan-Pasha. Using concrete examples, we see how the authority of the Crimean khans gradually fell, which was a consequence of the decline of their independence in relations with Istanbul. The Ottoman author gives us very valuable information on the historical geography of the Crimean Khanate, as well as the peoples who were part of its orbit of influence. And first of all, this applies to the Nogais living within the khanate. The author outlines the area of their settlement, gives the division of the Nogai of the Crimean yurt into 4 departments or divisions. They represented a conglomerate of Large and Small Nogai families, such as the Urmametevs, Sheydyakovs, who moved to the Crimea already in the 17th century, as well as the Mansurovs, who make up the «ancestral» Nogai of the khanate. Of particular interest are the data on the degree of dependence of Nogai mirzas on Girei. This concerns the participation of Nogais in campaigns organized by both the khans themselves and the highest dignitaries of the state. So, we find out that invitations were sent to the Nogai mirzas to participate in campaigns, which they could either accept or not. It is also important to point out the absence in the text of a source of information about any single leader or biya Nogai, to whom all 4 of their units would obey. Consequently, the Crimean Nogais did not have any political unity that once existed in the Great and Small Nogai hordes. Hezarfen informs us about the possibility for the Crimean Nogai to change their overlord, leaving for the possessions of the Moscow tsar, but at the same time always having the right to return to their former nomads.

Literature and language

Nicknames as a fragment of the language picture of the world of the Crimean Tatars
Ganieva E.S., Mazinov A.S.
Abstract

The research focuses on nicknames sourced from our survey, as well as on those received from Crimean Tatar periodical press through which this type of anthroponyms have been studied, interpreted and systematized.

The purpose of the study is to select, systematize and etymologically analyze Crimean Tatar nicknames used in various regions of the Crimean Peninsula.

The features leading to denomination are: appearance and other physiological characteristics, profession, personality and the deeds of a person. Such characteristics as historical data on the origin of the family (the name of a clan or tribe), the social status, faith of a person have less likely been a reason for nicknaming.

The article considers nicknames of noble people (e.g. Crimean khans and the family name, nickname derivatives of clans having a different status) as well as nicknames given to common folk, and describes their evaluative component.

Besides the tradition of people nicknaming, villages were also awarded nicknames.

The structure and meaning of nicknames differed within the dialects of the Crimean Tatar language. At the same time, there used to be nicknames common to all regions of the peninsula. Crimean Tatar nicknames have both clear and vague etymology.

The research provides with a more detailed classification of Crimean Tatar nicknames. An attempt has been made to give an etymological interpretation of individual nicknames and determine their dialect.

Lexical-semantic group “War and Weapon” in the Crimean Tatar language
Sattarova Z.M.
Abstract

The military lexicon was already formed in the common Turkic period and covers almost all spheres of military affairs. This lexicon consists of common Turkic, common Altaic and borrowed words. The article comprehensively examines in synchronic and diachronic aspects the lexical-semantic group «war and weapons» of the Crimean Tatar language. By means of comparative analysis, the common Altaic, common Turkic, native and borrowed strata of the lexicon are revealed. It confirms that most of them, with changing social conditions, are forgotten and turn into archaisms and historicisms. In this regard, from dictionaries, fiction and respondents, all words belonging to this area are collected and fixed (about 200 lexical units are collected), historical and etymological analysis is given, as well as an evaluation of the semantic and functional features of these lexical units in the modern language. Paradigmatic relations are studied, and as a result, 25 synonymous series are identified. The appearance of synonyms of the lexical-semantic group «war and weapons» is connected with the emergence of new words, with the peculiarities of lexical dialectisms, with Arab-Persian and Russian (or penetrated from Western European languages through Russian) borrowings. In the modern Crimean Tatar language such borrowings constitute the main part of the military vocabulary.

The Crimean Khanate and Poland-Lithuania. International Diplomacy on the European Periphery (15th–18th Century). A Study of Peace Treaties Followed by Annotated Documents. Ottoman Empire and its Heritage (2)
Kołodziejczyk D.
Abstract

This work is a translation from English of the Chapter 4 “The Polish and Lithuanian Instruments of Peace Addressed to the Khans” from the second part “A Study in the Crimean and Polish-Lithuanian diplomatics and diplomacy” of the scientific work “The Crimean Khanate and Poland-Lithuania. International Diplomacy on the European Periphery (15th–18th Century). A Study of Peace Treaties Followed by Annotated Documents. The Ottoman Empire and its Heritage” (pp. 425–443). The book “Crimean Khanate and Poland-Lithuania” is the result of many years of research by the famous historian, director of the Institute of History of the University of Warsaw, professor of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences Dariusz Kolodziejczyk, who studied the history of diplomatic relations between the Crimean Khanate and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The book contains many interesting facts, analyses and documents that illuminate different aspects of this complex and controversial cooperation. In Chapter 4 “The Polish and Lithuanian Instruments of Peace Addressed to the Khans” the author analyzes the form, content and significance of the documents that Poland-Lithuania sent to the Crimean khans as confirmation of peaceful relations. The author shows how these documents reflected the different stages of historical development of both sides, as well as how they influenced their mutual perception and respect. The author examines different types of documents such as letters, diplomatic accreditations, treaties, agreements, privileges, and letters of gift. The author also focuses on the visual aspects of documents such as language, handwriting, seals, signatures and ornaments. He shows how these documents reflected the complex relationship between the two states based on mutual dependence, conflict, and cooperation. The author also explores the way that Polish-Lithuanian side adapted its diplomacy to the traditions and demands of the Crimean Khanate, as well as how the Crimean khans perceived and interpreted these documents.
