Abstract
The article pays attention to the image of Russia in the works of the most important writer of Portuguese realism, J. M. Eça de Queirós. The objective of the research is to define the specific features of the representation of Russia as a cultural and civilisational subject of world history in the perception of Portuguese literature of the XIXth century through the creative works of J. M. Eça de Queirós. From the analysis, it follows that the image of Russia in the mind of the Portuguese people of the XIXth is ambivalent: on the one hand, the country is inextricably linked with European reality and its cultural landscape. On the other hand, Russia represents alien and mysterious reality for Western Europe, which is supported by various myths.
