Abstract
The article focuses on the usage of chess terminology as metaphors in digital media texts based on Vietnamese online media. It determines the types of texts in which chess terms remain within their terminological system or, on the contrary, are determinalized and act as metaphors or metonymies. Research aim: to identify the patterns of chess terms usage in online media texts. Methods: Component analysis. Research results: It is the genre, purpose, target audience and semantics of the text that define whether chess terms determinalize or not when used in the media discourse. They often lose their terminological semantic characteristics and are used as metaphors for two opposing powers, especially in texts about the economy, military actions, politics or sports.
