MVHVΛV: towards the Interpretation of the Tuscan Epigraphic Inscription

Valkov D.V.

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to reinterpret the content and historical context of the inscription MVHVΛV available in the medieval Tuscan epigraphic material. The structure of military-political and cultural contacts of Tuscany in the VIII – 1st half of the XII century, as well as a number of objections related to the Michaelic interpretation, makes it possible to reinterpret the inscription MVHVΛV based on the Quranic substrate: as a transmission through the Latin graphics of the Quranic exclamation mā šāʾ Allāh. The inscription MVHVΛV, as well as monuments of Islamic Arabographic epigraphy of the X–XII centuries, embedded in the urban space of Christian Pisa, acquired in this connotation an ideological, apotropaic and invocative meaning.

Pishchalnikova V.A., Jiaqian W.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to establish the psychological relevance of the symbolic content of color meanings; the main method is a free associative experiment; the presentation material is specific field structures of reactions. The paper proposes an experimental technique for diagnosing the psychological relevance of the symbolic content of color lexemes; it is established that the frequency of symbolic reactions significantly depends on the substantial complexity of traditional symbolic meanings and their significance in modern culture, allowing the development of new meaningful components. Nuclear reactions show a high level of embedding of color names as representatives of symbolic meanings in associative-verbal networks.

Synonymic Variation as a Result of Individual Author’s Literary Reflection in the Description of a Fictional Character

Serebriakova S.V., Protopopov I.E.

Abstract

The article studies the peculiarities of individual author’s synonymic variation in the description of a character’s personality in the novel by J. Austen “Sense and Sensibility”. The aim of the research is to determine the individual author’s peculiar features of synonymic variability as a process and as a result of fictional reflection. Synonymic means of varying degrees of proximity are determined through the use of methods of linguistic, pragmatic, contextual analysis, and pragmatic and axiological modeling, which allow to exemplify the controversial image of Edward Ferrars by outlining the vector of his interpretation by the reader. As a result of the linguistic and pragmatic analysis the modeling of hierarchically organized text synonymic paradigms was performed, revealing conceptually significant personality traits of the fictional character in the author’s projection.

Toponyms in Phrasemes: on the Deonymisation of Proper Names and the Reconstruction of Etymon

Evdokimova M.S., Tsvetaeva E.N.

Abstract

This paper aims to understand how toponyms function as parts of idioms in German. To that end, we use the overarching diachronic approach, as well as structural-semantic modelling, phraseological identification, comparative and etymohistorical analysis. The paper is of relevance as the rapidly growing field of semantics pays more and more attention to phraseology. The study takes a particular interest in deonymisation of toponyms in phrasemes. In this paper, we take a look at one common European idiom to showcase how useful the structural semantic modelling can be when analysing universal and national toponym containing idioms. It is also shown that there is a need to improve the method further taking research specific contexts into account.

Reflection of the Empirical and Metaphorical Connection of the Concepts of “Time” and “Age” in English and Russian Set Expressions and Proverbs

Shcherbo P.A.

Abstract

The article examines the concepts “time” and “age” in the English and Russian language worldview in phraseological units and proverbs (the most representative units of language for studying the conceptual system of man and the ways of conceptualizing man’s experience). The metaphoric and empirical interconnections of these two concepts are being discussed. Both concepts prove anthropocentric and are associated with the linear and cyclic models of the world, and additionally, with the category “development”. The analysis reveals some metaphors common for both English and Russian language worldviews. The metaphors identified are based on spatial and physical semiotic oppositions. Contrasting and comparison allows to discover parallelism in the understanding of time and age, as well as to perceive their subordination: the concept “time” is manifested through the concept “age”.

Solntseva N.M.

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to identify the stylistic dominants of S. A. Klychkov’s prose in the context of the discussion about language in 1934. The material of the study was the novels of the 1920s «The Sugar German», «Chertukhinsky Balakir», «Prince of World». The methods of text analysis are hermeneutical, comparative, historical and literary, biographical ones. It is concluded that the combination of ornamental, verse-like prose and folk tale reveals in Klychkov’s creative manner two narrators, between whom there is no formal boundary and who are mentally united. Metaphors, comparisons, the versioned composition of the text, metrical fragments are fused with live speech, which is explained by the narrative principle «combination of words». The position on the connection between the idiostyle and the social portrait of the writer, which was voiced during the discussion, was preceded by the attitudes of orthodox criticism of the 1920s.
