Abstract
The article analyzes new outward challenges for Vietnam as a result of changes in US and Chinese policies in Asia, and the response to these changes in Vietnam. Four blocks of questions are considered. The first analyzes the results of the APEC summit in Danang, achieved in spite of the complex international situation of the country. The second shows the contrast between the two political courses presented at the summit by the US and China. The third discloses the doctrine of the "free and open Indo-Pacific region", presented by D. Trump. It is considered as an evidence of the weakening influence of the United States in the region. The final part of the article shows how Vietnam reacts on these initiatives. According to the author the position of Vietnam reflects the policy of renewal, openness and independence based on the "three no" principle.
