Abstract
The article studies the implementation of the basic metaphor “life is a trial / struggle for survival” in the novel “About a Boy” by Nick Hornby. The material for the study was the original text of the novel and a card index of contexts illustrating this metaphor, compiled on its basis. The study is carried out with the help of contextual and linguistic stylistic analysis. The analysis of the text shows that this metaphor becomes a means of reflecting the main characters’ worldview. In addition, the basic metaphor unites the entire text, gives it semantic and figurative integrity. Further analogies based on the basic metaphor, going back to various source spheres, form more complex structures. They clearly demonstrate the transformation of the characters’ worldview, their relationship with the world and people.
