SPECIFIC FUNCTIONING OF MILITARY METAPHORS IN CINEMATOGRAPHIC TEXT (a study of Eldar Ryazanov’s fi lms)

Li Y.

Abstract

The paper examines the functioning of military metaphors as one of the leading types of conceptualmetaphors in the texts of Eldar Ryazanov’s fi lms. In contemporary linguistics, there is an increasing focus on the studyof cognitive metaphors, which serve as a crucial tool for interpreting creolized texts, particularly cinematographic texts. However, there has been no research specifi cally exploring the manifestation of military metaphors in fi lms. This articlerepresents the fi rst attempt to identify and analyze metaphorical models that structure thematic groups of militaryvocabulary, including the following: “naming military actions and ways of warfare”, “naming outcomes of militaryactions”, “naming individuals directly and indirectly involved in military actions”, “naming types of weapons and theircomponents”, and “naming military groups and units”. The study reveals the lexico-semantic, categorical-grammatical,functional, stylistic, and linguocultural characteristics of these metaphorical models in fi lm language. It highlights thenational and cultural uniqueness of the metaphorical understanding of the vocabulary associated with the semanticdomain of “war”, thereby refl ecting a fragment of the Russian linguistic worldview through identifying key instances of using military metaphors in everyday contexts. The fi ndings can be applied to the teaching of Russian as a foreign language and can inform the development of textbooks on metaphorology and the linguistics of cinematographic texts.

A. A. SHAKHMATOV’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF LINGUISTIC THEORY AND METHODOLOGY

Sirota E.V.

Abstract

The relevance of the study is conditioned by the intensifi ed interest of modern linguists in the history ofthe formation of Russian grammar, as well as syntactic typology and methodology. The aim of the work is to study thetheoretical heritage of A. A. Shakhmatov and to evaluate the scientist’s role in the formation of Russian and Europeanlinguistics. The purpose has determined the consideration of the following problems: A. A. Shakhmatov’s contributionto the development of classical and non-classical linguistics, the scientist’s innovative description of the syntactic tierof language, his original ideas on the study of the grammatical classes of words, the doctrine of grammatical category, the analysis of linguistic facts not only from synchronic but also from diachronic points of view. The theoreticalsignifi cance of the study consists in revealing the most important provisions of A. A. Shakhmatov’s theory and theirsignifi cance for the development of European linguistics. The practical signifi cance is associated with the possibility of applying the results of the study in teaching syntax, morphology, lexicology, and lexicography of the Russian language, as well as the disciplines “General Linguistics”, “History of the Russian Language”, or “Methods of Teaching the Russian Language”.

Strelnikova N.D.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to study the issue of refl ecting substandard vocabulary in a modern work of fi ctionand the practice of its discussion in teaching Russian as a foreign language. For the analysis, the author has chosenthe novel Storm Warning by Andrey Rubanov and Vasily Avchenko as an example of the speech discourse of modernRussia, proposing to consider it as relatable teaching material that fosters intensive immersion into the modern cultureof the country of the studied language and the formation of speech skills. The text of the novel captures a new linguistic reality, vividly and capaciously demonstrates the inexhaustible possibilities of the national language, and reveals the speech of the contemporaries of the new century in all the variety of its shades, which underscores the relevance and novelty of this study.

COMPOUND ADJECTIVES WITH THE ROOT RYZH- IN THE POETRY OF THE FIRST THIRD OF THE XX CENTURY

Tverdokhleb O.G.

Abstract

The study aims to explore the representation of color designations through derivative adjectives with theroot ryzh- (the Russian root word for red or ginger) in the Russian poetry of the fi rst third of the XX century, as well asto examine their frequency of use. The primary method employed in the analysis is descriptive, incorporating word-formationand semantic analysis, along with classifi cation, dictionary defi nition analysis, etymological examination, andstatistical analysis. The author proposes to categorize the compound adjectives containing the root ryzh- into two maingroups: 1) color-color adjectives and 2) color-non-color adjectives. The illustrative material drawn from the poeticworks of this period reveals that poets with varying frequency employed three subgroups of compound color-coloradjectives (less frequently) and fi ve subgroups of compound color-non-color adjectives (more frequently) to vividlyconvey the depicted reality and to aesthetically realize their intentions. The former three subgroups denote the connectionswith the color red of: a) another color, b) a color shade, and c) a potential color characteristic, while the latterfi ve subgroups denote only one red (ginger) color: d) in possessive constructions, e) in combination with the names ofliving beings, f) in combination with non-color qualitative attributes, g) in combination with procedural attributes, andh) as part of a transitive group. The fi ndings of this study may prove valuable for linguists interested in the linguistic characteristics of Russian Silver Age poetry and could also be benefi cial in the development of dictionary compilation practices.

LEGAL TERMINOLOGY IN IVAN AKSAKOV’S JOURNALISM FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF LANGUAGE REFLECTION (exemplifi ed by the words legal and legality)

Sekiro O.O.

Abstract

Legal terminology plays a signifi cant role in the development of the nineteenth-century Russian vocabulary. It was regularly used by a prominent Russian Slavophile, Ivan Aksakov, whose views were shaped within theprofessional community of legal experts and directly assimilated the ideas that contributed to the development of theRussian legal tradition. So far, texts written by the Slavophiles belonging to the one of the main directions that affectedthe social and political environment in Russia from the 1840s through the 1860s have not been described by linguists. The signifi cance of Ivan Aksakov in the media landscape of the XIX century lies in his role as an author who introducedSlavophile ideas into public discourse, which, along with the active development of journalism vocabulary, determinesthe relevance of this study. This research examines the author’s interpretation of legal terminology through language reflection, which in Aksakov’s publicistic texts marks the distinction between “foreign” and “native” words in his debateswith opponents. To understand the role of language refl ection in articulating the author’s perspective on legal lexicon, the paper analyzes the semantic interactions involving the objects of language refl ection, namely, the words legal andlegality that denote the fundamental legal concepts, as well as other lexical and phraseological units and so-called “refl exives”. The fi ndings indicate that Aksakov’s use of these terms led to the emergence of new ideological connotations, closely tied to their religious and moral interpretations.

EMOTION AS A COMPONENT OF SCIENTIFIC COGNITION (a case study of texts produced by E. D. Polivanov and M. V. Panov)

Schepalin M.D.

Abstract

The relevance of the study is conditioned by the growing interest of domestic and foreign scientists inthe features of cognitive processes, including their affective component. Language data are recognized in some casesas the only key to this kind of knowledge. This study draws on the research papers and letters of two linguists, an orientalistE. D. Polivanov and a Russianist M. V. Panov. The purpose of the study was to identify motives for emotionalreactions indicating the achievement of the result of scientifi c knowledge, to distinguish between the universal and theindividual in such reactions, and to describe the language markers of the affective component of scientifi c research. Theintended goal was achieved using the methods of content analysis, comparative analysis, and stylistic analysis, takinginto account the latest data from neuroaesthetics and cognitive psychology. Conclusions were made about the need toadd the “emotional reactivity/resistance to new knowledge” opposition to cognitive styles, and also about the fact thatin expressing their cognitive emotions scientists are subject to social restraint to varying degrees, that the choice of toneand means of intellectual expression is infl uenced by the addressee factor, and that major scientists experience vivid and diverse emotions when achieving the result of scientifi c research. In addition, linguistic means of expressing cognitive emotion are described in interaction with means of intellectual expression.

THEORETICAL, APPLIED AND CONTRASTIVE LINGUISTICS

RHETORICAL STRUCTURE OF MIKHAIL LOMONOSOV’S SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE

Danilina N.I.

Abstract

The article aims to analyze to what extent and for what purposes the theoretical propositions outlinedin Mikhail Lomonosov’s rhetorical works are applied in his natural science discourse. The material examined consistsof essays written in the genre of “discourse”. The relevance of this research lies in the text-oriented approach of contemporarystudies of scientifi c discourse, while its novelty stems from the lack of prior research on Lomonosov’s workfrom this perspective. It is shown that Lomonosov’s choice of a specifi c genre was infl uenced by extralinguistic factors, since he was to deliver a speech at a formal public meeting of the Academy of Sciences. The rhetorical structure ofthese works is evident in both the composition (including a panegyric-style introduction and conclusion) and the useof lexical and syntactic rhetorical elements throughout the text. The main categories of rhetorical techniques identifi edinclude “decorations”, “extension”, and “questioning”, with their functions being both merely rhetorical and supportiveof contact with the audience. The overall conclusion drawn is that the rhetorical form used to present information in the context of a formal public speech did not confl ict with the serious content of Lomonosov’s work and was compatible with the scientifi c discourse of the XVIII century.

NOTES ON THE MEANING OF PRESENT AND AORIST STEMS IN RIG VEDA

Krasukhin K.G.

Abstract

The paper examines the system of aspects and tenses in Rig Veda, focusing particularly on the stemsof the present (both imperfect and injunctive) and the aorist. A complex issue arises in defi ning their meanings andfunctions. The concept of confi ned versus unconfi ned action does not always adequately capture the present-aoristopposition, as present forms can sometimes refer to events that were completed in the past. The author introduces the category of “point of reference”, as articulated by Hans Reichenbach, to clarify this distinction. The aorist tense stands out from other tenses by emphasizing this reference point. Overall, the Vedic verb captures the stage of the evolution of the aspectual system into a temporal one: the imperfect denotes events from a distant mythological past (which maybe completed), while the aorist refers to more recent events or those that precede others. In this sense, the Vedic verb shares similarities with tense forms in European languages, as described by Harald Weinrich, where a contrast is drawn between foreground tenses (French passé simple) and background tenses (French imparfait). This comparison aids in understanding the development of aspect and time categories across different world languages.

SEMANTICS OF THE STATIVE PERFECT IN THE BULGARIAN LANGUAGE: COMPARATIVE AND TRANSLATION ASPECTS

Luchaev D.I.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the scope of meanings of the stative perfect in the Bulgarianlanguage and to identify its equivalence to the corresponding categories in the Russian language at the interlingual andtranslation levels. The hypothesis of the study is that the stative perfect can be an intermediate link between the indicativeperfect and non-evidential forms in the Bulgarian language and has no full equivalents in Russian. Through thecomparative analysis the paper examines passages from fi ction containing the above-mentioned form and their translationsinto Russian. The fi ndings lead to a conclusion on the non-equivalence of the stative perfect in relation to the Russian language. The paper also presents a set of grammatical forms with similar semantics. The results of the study can be used both for further research in this area and as ready-made translation strategies when working with Bulgarian texts.

METAPHORICAL REPRESENTATION OF IDENTITY IN THE HEADLINES OF ENGLISH-LANGUAGE MEDIA DISCOURSE

Mosyagina M.S.

Abstract

This study analyses the metaphorical representation of identity in the headlines of English-languagemedia discourse, with particular emphasis on metaphorical models with the target domain “IDENTITY”. The relevanceof the topic is driven by the growing interest in studying media as a powerful tool for shaping public consciousness andconstructing socially signifi cant concepts, such as identity. The aim of the research is to identify and systematize themetaphorical models used to represent identity in the headlines of English-language media. Cognitive analysis and linguisticinterpretation of media texts are employed in this study. The research corpus includes 47 headlines from leadingEnglish-language publications (The Guardian and The Independent), selected based on their popularity and infl uence. The fi ndings of the study show that identity is often metaphorically represented through images of a mask, journey, loss, building, and territory, refl ecting the dynamic and multi-layered nature of this concept in media discourse. The mainconclusions are that metaphors play a key role in shaping readers’ perception of identity and that media discourse actively uses these metaphorical models to manipulate public opinion. This study makes a contribution to media discourse linguistics and cognitive linguistics, deepening the understanding of the role of metaphor in contemporary media space.

METAPHOR AS A LANGUAGE INSTRUMENT FOR SHAPING AN ENEMY IMAGE IN WOMEN’S POLITICAL DISCOURSE IN ARGENTINA

Kushnereva D.A.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze the specifi c features of the use of metaphor as an element of politicaldiscourse designed to shape the image of an enemy in the speeches of female politicians in Argentina, namely EvaPeron, Isabel Peron, and Cristina Kirchner. The key tasks of the study were to determine the similarities and differencesbetween the created images of the opposition, as well as to analyze the tactics and strategies of political discourse implementedwhen using the metaphors. The corpus of material was selected using a continuous sampling method; themethods of quantitative and qualitative analysis of the research results were also used, including semantic, stylistic, and comparative methods. The result of the study is a representation of the source domains of the metaphor: “animalworld”, “religion”, “organism (disease)” and “sports (football)”. The purpose of their use is the dehumanization and depersonification of the enemy’s image, the sacralization of the struggle, and a positive presentation of struggling political leaders, as well as the creation of images that are understandable and accessible to the audience. The study of metaphor as an instrument for shaping the image of an enemy allows us to reveal the manipulative techniques used by political leaders to attract audience support.

DYSTOPIAN MOTIFS IN SIGIZMUND KRZHIZHANOVSKY’S PROSE

Trubetskova E.G.

Abstract

The article examines various models of future development for both the country and society as depictedin the works of Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky, specifi cally in Memories of the Future, The Letter Killers Club, and YellowCoal. Although dystopian motifs are prevalent throughout Krzhizhanovsky’s writings, they have not been the subjectof a separate study, which highlights the originality of this research. The study’s relevance lies in its exploration ofdystopian issues, which are essential for understanding the ideological and philosophical dimensions of the author’swork, as well as the pressing questions he raises. In contrast to the optimistic visions of future society found in Sovietliterature, Krzhizhanovsky presents a more pessimistic outlook, capturing the fear-laden atmosphere of Moscow duringthe 1930s to 1950s (Memories of the Future), the implications of a global energy crisis (Yellow Coal), and the potential consequences of bioengineering and the centralized regulation of private life (The Letter Killers Club, Yellow Coal). This article clarifi es the unique portrayal of the future crafted by Krzhizhanovsky by comparing his futurological predictions with those of his contemporaries.

ARTISTIC STRATEGIES OF YEVGENY KHARITONOV’S AND EDUARD LIMONOV’S AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL PROSE

Liskov A.O., Rozova A.E.

Abstract

The article presents a comparative analysis of the artistic strategies employed by Yevgeny Kharitonovand Eduard Limonov in depicting the autobiographical heroes of their prose during the early stages of their writingcareers. The relevance and originality of this study stem from the limited exploration of this topic and the overall insufficient examination of these authors’ bodies of works. The focus of the analysis is on the central characters in Kharitonov’scollection Under House Arrest (1969–1981) and Limonov’s key novels It’s Me, Eddie (1976) and The Diary ofa Loser, or the Secret Notebook (1979), all of which possess a distinctly autobiographical nature. Through a comparativeexamination of the protagonists and the ways in which they are portrayed, the study identifi es notable similarities inhow both authors refl ect the existential confl ict faced by the Russian intelligentsia in the 1970s. This confl ict is closelytied to the portrayal of a marginal hero who identifi es as a “Russian writer”, navigating the challenges of emigration (in Limonov’s case) or forced creative isolation (in Kharitonov’s case). The analysis also reveals the dynamics of changes in the form of the authors’ autobiographical texts.

TRADITIONAL FOLK SONGS IN THE REPERTOIRES OF MEZEN CHOIRS

Semenova A.S.

Abstract

This study focuses on the singing practices of village communities, which were the object of the author’sfi eld observations during expeditions to the Mezen River and its tributaries in the Arkhangelsk region from 2007 troughthe 2010s. The research was conducted through participant observation, which led to the identifi cation of two distincttypes of singing practices in this area: public and private. The primary goal of this research was to explore the uniquecharacteristics of these practices, with fi ndings partially presented in this article. It highlights the role of traditional songfolklore within the repertoires of rural choirs. By examining singing as a communal activity, this approach offers a freshperspective on the subject. In Russian philological folkloristics, the analysis typically focuses on song texts, leavingthe practical aspects of singing relatively unexplored. Given the anthropological shift in the humanities, this study isparticularly relevant. The fi ndings suggest that the continued presence of traditional song folklore in the repertoires of rural choirs, even a century after the decline of the peasant class, underscores its enduring signifi cance for both local residents and the authorities supporting these folk groups.
