Modal Meanings of the German Verb Können and the Russian Moč in Different Types of Contexts

Resumo

The article describes contextual conditions which influence the interpretation of the modal meanings of the verb moč in Russian and können in German. By the usage of the method of contextual analysis, descriptive and transformational methods, it is shown that the transitivity of modal meanings is influenced by such parameters as the activity/passivity of the semantic subject, the type of verb, temporal perspective and the use of appropriate lexical indicators.

The Implementation of Opposition Constructions in the Oral Explanatory Discourse

Resumo

The article is devoted to some features of the use of opposition constructions in oral monologue speech. The constructions of opposition taken as a basis, previously identified by the methods of corpus linguistics for written publicist speech, now explored in TEDTalk monologue speeches in English. The search for sentences illustrating certain constructions was carried out by a continuous sample. The analysis showed that some of them are used more often than others in oral explanatory discourse, and also made it possible to identify new constructions that were not previously classified by researchers as opposition constructions.

Convertite’s Media Narrative as a Sociocultural and Linguo-pragmatic Phenomenon

Thearticle defines the essence of religious conversion, considers sociocultural and linguopragmatic aspects of convertite’s media narrative. The media narrative is considered as a semiotical compound in which the author’s narrative intention is realized using verbal and non-verbal means (video, photo, audio etc.). The author’s strategy in media narrative is the agency with Islam. It is realized using various techniques (representative, mnemonic, adaptive, integrating etc.), which reflect various stages of conversion (pre-conversion, conversion, post-integrating etc.), coming up to various parts of the narrative composition.

The Principle 0f Iconicity in Cognitive-Pragmatic Situational Modelling of the German Complex Sentence (based on the Syntactic Concept Atribution)

The paper analyzes the syntactic concept ATRIBUTION, which is represented by the model of an attributive clause in a German scientific text. Cognitive-pragmatic situations are studied according to the principle of iconicity. Criteria are proposed for delimiting iconic situations from non-iconic ones. Situations of restrictive and appositive types are revealed, evaluated as iconic / non-iconic.

Features of Semantic Perception of a Verbal and Creolized Foreign Language Text

The article presents the results of a study of the perception of verbal and creolized texts in German by Russian recipients. The study was conducted using the scaling method (according to scales in German and Russian). It is established that the evaluation of the verbal text in Russian schools always turns out to be higher in absolute value of the evaluation of the same text on (translated) German scales. Implementation in most cases increases the absolute grades for German schools and lowers for Russian schools.

Correlation Between Prosodic Means and Accentuating Gestures in Cross-Cultural Discourse (Gender Study)

The article analyses the role of the gender factor in the correlation between prosodic means and accentuating gestures. The research is based on the speech of 14 General American respondents engaged in cross-cultural discourse. The results of auditive, visual, acoustic, and comparative types of analysis reveal gender-specific features of the correlation under study. Singled out differences in the male and female styles of communicative behaviour emphasise the significance of the issue in question.

This article is dedicated to investigating the model of irony called OBJECT-EQUATING in the discourse of the TV-program „heute-show” on the ZDF channel. The article explores the application of this model within a multimodal text and analyzes its influence on forming ironic meaning in the text. The article provides a linguistic analysis of a multimodal text (a video excerpt) from „heute-show”, related to the topic of Deutsche Bahn. The analysis reveals the peculiarities of using the model of OBJECT-EQUATING.

Technology for Determining the Colour Characteristics of the Text of a Fiction Work (on the Material of the German Language)

Resumo

A technology for determining the colour characteristics of a fiction work based on the corpus approach, which involves the use of automatized analysis, is described. The original texts of Franz Kafka’s novels “The Castle”, “The Trial” and “America” are used as research material. It is concluded that the shown technology gives an accurate idea of the general “colour” of the text, if the colour data bank for a particular fiction work is sufficiently complete.

Presentation Principles of Compatibility in Russian-German and German-Russian Combinatorial-Type Dictionaries in Comparative Aspect

The article provides an overview of the principles of demonstrating lexical compatibility in Russian-German and German-Russian combinatorial dictionaries and the available prospectuses of similar dictionaries of the 20th and 21st centuries. The features of the organization of dictionary entries are revealed, the most and least successful ways of organizing of the lexicographic material from the perspective of users are predicted, missing ways of demonstrating compatibility in the analyzed dictionaries are indicated, variants of fragments of missing types of dictionaries are proposed.

Differences and the Similarity of Metaphorical Meanings of Some Nouns in Spoken Modern German and Russian

The article is devoted to analysis of metaphorisation of some nouns in spoken modern German and their parities in spoken modern Russian, which are based on the identical image. In the article are shown the cases of identical figurative meaning, of different figurative meaning in both languages, while retaining of identical image, the cases of the absence of figurative meaning in Russian and of the presence of this meaning in German. The importance of the associations while building of this kind of nouns is under consideration.

The materials under scrutiny are: Peter Bruegel the Elder’s ‘Landscape with the Fall of Icarus’ as described in the German language in the Brussels Royal Fine-Arts Museum catalogue and in a fictional essay by the German author Wolf Biermann.

Manifestation of Cognitive Load in Simultaneous Interpreting Using Adapters (based on the German language)

The current research studies the increase in cognitive load and its manifestations on the verbal and non-verbal levels of speech during simultaneous interpreting from / into the native language. The results showed that an increase in cognitive load is manifested in speech difficulties, especially those associated with sound lengthening and slowing down the tempo, as well as in increased use of adapters.

A Game in a Children’s German-Speaking Orthodox Flyer

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of “play” in a children’s German-language Orthodox flyer. The article gives a communicative-pragmatic characteristic of a children’s Orthodox flyer (addressee, addresser, communicative goal), defines the communicative strategies used in it (catechetical-edifying and play), tactics and verbal and non-verbal means of their implementation. A game strategy is considered as a key one, which allows to convey knowledge about God to a children’s audience in an accessible and entertaining way.

The Perception-Production Link in the Russian-English Prosodic Interference (the Case Study of Terminal Tones)

The perception-production link has been studied mainly on the segmental level. The paper examines the perception and production of terminal tones (their placement, pitch level and movement) by Russian learners of English with different level of language proficiency. Two experiments have resulted in a correlation between the cases when the tone placement and its characteristics are identical. The former has shown up to 50 % of corresponding tone placement cases and the latter - 56 % of cases. The perception task has revealed up to 25 % of corresponding tone descriptions and in the production task there are 27 % of such cases.

Author’s Vocabulary in Science Fiction: Ways of Formation and Interlanguage Translation (based on the Works of William Gibson)

The main problem of the study is the formation of the author’s vocabulary in the text of science fiction and the specifics of its translation into Russian. Research methods: analysis, synthesis, comparative analysis, continuous text sampling method. The materials for the investigation include stories and novels by W. Gibson, as well as their translations into Russian. The results of the study are presented in the form of an analysis of 110 author’s neologisms and their translations into Russian. The specifics of translation are determined by the use of calculus, transliteration and lexical additions, concretization, creation of a new term and lexical omissions.

The Mythologeme of the River in G. Yakhina’s Novel “Children of Mine”

The article states that the river Volga in G. Yakhina’s novel “Children of mine” is not only a geographic object, but also the key to understanding a whole set of concepts related to the plot, symbolic and mythopoetic levels of the text. The river is the universal archetype and means the border between life and death, reality and mystery, commonness and perfection, temporality and eternity. The river becomes one of the central images of the work. The river Volga in the novel is a locus sacralis, an altar, and a prima materia, the womb of the universe, the feminine principle, the source of life.

Trauma Narratives in Petrushevskaya’s Novels

The article discusses the models of traumatic narrative in Petrushevskaya's work, including non-linear narrative for the reference of ethical family trauma, intertextual narrative for the aesthetic perception of collective trauma, and rehearsal narrative for creating a thematic metaphor for psychic trauma. It was revealed that in the deep relationship between the voices of the author, the narrator and the character, inconsistency, heterogeneity and polyphony of the narrative discourse of trauma and the critical attitude of the author to the depiction of traumatic events are manifested.

Semantic Boundaries of the “Holy City” Concept in Russian Culture

The article examines the contexts of understanding the concept of the «Holy City», provides examples from various spheres of artistic culture that represent this image in the domestic history. The boundaries of modern scientific interpretations of the “topos” are also noted, the connection of the image with the self-identification of the culture carrier is revealed. The research involves interdisciplinary approaches that allow the author to approach a holistic understanding of this concept. The semantic boundaries of the concept of the “Holy City” are determined by the sacral origins, which in their turn determine the translation of the corresponding semantic connotations in modern culture.

The article is devoted to the artistic legasy of the curator and art critic Vitaly Patsyukov. Both his articles and curatorial projects are considered from philosophical positions in the context of the specifics of curatorial practice. Patsyukov’s ideas are presented in their relationship within the key categories of the philosophy of postmodernism and with the contemporary intellectual context. The article formulates the curatorial position of Patsyukov, expressed in a number of principles of curatorship. Comments are given and hypotheses about the general principles of supervision are made on the basis of the studied material.
