Tatar historiography of the epic “Idegey”

Mukhametzianova L.

Resumo

The purpose of the study is a systematic analysis of the Tatar historiography of the dastan “Idegey”; the article accumulates a set of basic studies from the 19th century to the present day related to the Tatar epic of the dastan “Idegey”.

Research materials: The multifunctional science of folk art samples includes a considerable number of textual and theoretical studies devoted to the collection, publication, and study of the monumental folk epic “Idegey”. At the same time, the historiography of Dastan in Tatar studies has not yet become the subject of special research in the context of philological and historical sciences, although the famous Dastan of the Golden Horde period has repeatedly attracted and continues to attract the attention of prominent collectors and researchers over the years. The relevance of the article is explained by the need to rethink the Tatar historiography of the epic, taking into account the achievements of philological and historical science and presenting a holistic view of this problem.

Results and novelty of the research: The study is the first effort at a systematic analysis and description of sources and scientific literature about “Idegey” epic belonging to Tatar scientists. The emphasis on the works of domestic and foreign researchers in relation to the Tatar-language texts of the dastan in different historical periods, along with the identification of significant problems characteristic of the study of the historiography of the epic “Idegey” are also included in the circle of interest of the author. The novelty of the research is a reliable interpretation of the historiography of “Idegey” in the light of new scientific requirements, systematization of assessments, characteristics, and revision of a whole range of previous views on the declared topic. This research provides an important impetus for the active scientific circulation of a number of significant materials on the “Idegey” epic in a broad historical and cultural context.

Nigmat Hakim in the dastan “Idegey” study

Zayneeva G.

Resumo

The purpose of this research is a scientific study of the text of the manuscript of Nigmat Hakim “On Dastan ‘Idegey’” and its introduction into scientific circulation.

Research materials: A previously unpublished scientific work by the famous folklorist and linguist, Nigmat Hakim, entitled “On Dastan ‘Idegey’”, preserved in a manuscript in the fund No. 52 of the archive of the Center for Written Heritage of the G.Ibragimov Institute of Language, Literature and Art at the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. This fund is valuable because there are various materials about the dastan “Idegey” and its versions.

The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the work of Nigmat Hakim is being studied in full for the first time. Based on this archival source, the manuscript, the reader is presented with a comprehensive scientific view of the dastan “Idegey”. When writing his study, N. Hakim refers to the works of famous scientists and orientalists, based on information from various written sources, quoting them as evidence of one aspect or another of the dastan in question.

The results of the study: Most of the variants of the Tatar dastan “Idegey” have been preserved in manuscripts on Arabic graphics. One of the complete versions of the epic is the version of Sitdyk baba Zainetdinov, recorded by Nigmat Hakim in 1919. The text is scrupulously researched regarding the textual aspects: accurate reproduction of the source text, its authenticity, accessibility to the reader-researcher, commentary on the text, etc. The manuscript, “On Dastan ‘Idegey’”, consists of 13 chapters-sections, each of which is devoted to a particular issue of dastan research: the prerequisites for the emergence, preservation, variability, storytelling talents of the main characters, etc. There is a need to include the text of this manuscript within modern scientific circulation. It is one of the most valuable materials existing in source studies.

Variants of the tatar epos “Idegey” (in the Siberian area)

Fazlutdinov I.

Resumo

The dastan “Idegey” gained popularity in all regions where Tatars lived. This article will focus on the variants of the dastan collected in the Tatar villages of Western Siberia and the Teleutes.

The object of the work is to explore variants of the Tatar version of the folk epic “Idegey”.

The subject of the work is the area of distribution of the dastan and the variants found in the specified territory, their ideological and thematic –  as well as lexico-stylistic and dialectal – features associated with local affiliation.

The aim of the work is to identify all the variants recorded in Siberia, as well as to provide information about folklore researchers who collected and studied dastan, assessing the contribution of each of the researchers and describing historical inaccuracies of fragments and excerpts published in different years.

The research materials were archival and published versions of the Tatar dastan “Idegey”. Information from literary and historical sources and scientific research was used. The works of famous folklorists were involved, in particular numerous studies and publications of recent years.

We propose to analyze the variants of the Tatar version which were found orally or in writing in different settlements of Siberia and the border regions. They were recorded by informants belonging to different ethnic groups of the Siberian Tatars and preserving dialectal features. The second part was recorded by immigrants from the Volga region, more precisely from villages belonging to the regions of Tatarstan, or copied from texts preserved in their manuscripts. The article considers each option separately, highlights the main motives and plot features, and provides the most complete information about each option to date.

Studying kazakh versions of the legends about Edige

Ualiev T., Kushkumbayev A.

Resumo

This research aims to review and systematize archival and published Kazakh versions of the epic of “Edige” (Yedige) and compile a complete list of texts while including their structural and textual analysis.

For the materials of the article, both published and unpublished handwritten Kazakh versions of the legend of “Yedige” have been used. The work also involves extensive data from Kazakh historiography of the study of the epic of Edige, mainly the works of folklorists, as well as information from literary and historical sources.

Results and scientific novelty: A chronological review of the history of the epic of Edige in Kazakhstan has been conducted. An overview of all known variants and a comparative analysis of the main plots and motives of the epic have been made. Information is provided about folklore researchers and historical circumstances and conditions in which it was necessary to record and publish various versions of the epic in Kazakhstan. Prohibiting the study of the epic “Edige” had a negative impact not only on the field of Edige studies, but also on the study of the epic in Kazakhstan as a whole, limiting the scientific potential of researchers who were forced to avoid this topic. As a result, the topic of Edige and the Golden Horde remained outside the focus of Russian historical science for a long time, and many scientists began to build their careers focusing on mainstream topics of that period.

Three main regions of literary traditions were identified that influenced the formation of Kazakh versions of the legend. Variants of the legend of Edige, especially poetic fragments, had a significant impact on the work of the Kazakh akyns, zhyrshy, and zhyrau.

Epics about Idegei and His Relatives in the Epic Cycle “Forty Heroes of Crimea”

Sabitov Z., Karatayev A.

Resumo

Objective of the study: The aim of the research is to examine the content, origin, and chain of transmitters of the epics dedicated to the dynasty of the Golden Horde's beglerbeg, Idegei, included in the cycle of heroic epics, “Forty Heroes of Crimea”. A comparative analysis of each epic with available information about historical figures mentioned in the epics is carried out to identify the main characters. The study also seeks to determine the author of the entire cycle, “Forty Heroes of Crimea,” and establish the time and circumstances of the creation of these epics among the Kazakhs of the Junior Zhuz.

Materials of the study: The primary source of this research is the cycle of epics, “Forty Heroes of Crimea,” recorded from the oral tradition of Muryn Sengirbekuly and published as part of the “Madenі Mura” ("Cultural Heritage”) project in the 50th and 51st volumes of the “Babalar Sözi” (“Words of Ancestors”) series.

Results of the study: The author of the cycle “Forty Heroes of Crimea” has been identified as Kazytugan-zhyrau, a descendant of Idegei. The cycle of epics was composed in the last quarter of the 17th century. The circumstances of the creation of the cycle were related to Kazytugan's migration to the Kuban who were the descendants of Karasai. It has been established that the cycle of epics was introduced by fugitive Kuban Nogais into the Junior Zhuz Kazakh environment in 1745 under the rule of Nuraly Khan who settled them among the Kazakhs of the Berish clan of the Alshin tribe. These Nogais later formed the Besskaska-Berish branch from which the spread of the “Forty Heroes of Crimea” epics among the Kazakhs began. The first known Kazakh zhyrau to transmit the entire cycle was Abyl-zhyrau, followed by his students Nurym-zhyrau, Murat-akyn, and Kashagan-zhyrau. From these latter figures, Muryn-zhyrau Sengirbekuly learned the epics. The entire cycle of epics was recorded and published from his oral account.

Historical realities in the “Idegei” dastan

Iskhakov D.

Resumo

Purpose of the study: To reveal the importance of studying the dastan “Idegei” from the point of view of establishing the volume and nature of the historical information contained in it.

Research materials: Texts of the dastan “Idegei” with an emphasis on the Tatar versions of this epic work, including with special attention, first of all, to its national version, created through the efforts of Tatar folklorists and based on a number of oral and written versions (Siberian-Tatar, Crimean, Volga-Ural) of the dastan.

Results and scientific novelty: A systematic study of the plots of the dastan, containing a reflection of historical realities, made it possible to identify in it materials on the socio-political structure of the late Golden Horde, establish its connection with specific clans, clarify in general the issue of the Tatar stratum of the state, and deal with the symbolic "birds" and "golden throne", as well as three designations of the Ulus of Jochi (Altyn Urda, Ak Urda, Boz Urda). On this basis, it became possible to gain a deeper understanding of the characteristics of the historical consciousness of representatives of the state-forming Tatar class of the Ulus of Jochi at the stage of its beginning collapse.

Idegey: a Historical Personality and its Assessment in Russian Historiography

Izmailov I.

Resumo

The purpose of the study is to show the dynamics of the assessment of the personality of the ruler of the Golden Horde Idigey in Russian science of the imperial and Soviet periods.

Research materials: historical works of Russian historians who touched upon the assessment of the personality of Idigey in the 1840s – 1960s.

Results and novelty of the study: it is shown that the process of studying the history of the Golden Horde and its political history was complex and tortuous. This was especially true of the personality of Idigey, as well as the folk epic dedicated to him. Since the beginning of the study of this epic, historians have become interested in the historical personality himself, the relationship of his fate with the hero of the epic. In Russian science, his personality did not attract much attention. The emerging Tatar historical science accused Idigey of extreme ambitions, considering him the culprit of the campaigns of Aksak-Timur and the collapse of the Golden Horde. In the first half of the 20th century. historians and folklorists were influenced by the ideas of class struggle and tried to present him as a folk hero fighting against feudal oppression, which was undoubtedly a distortion of the facts. In 1944, by a decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU(b), the Golden Horde was recognized as a parasitic state, and Idigey was recognized as the most "insidious and predatory Horde ruler." Since that time, such a point of view has become decisive and uncontested for almost half a century, which froze Russian science in understanding this period of history.

Religious motives in the dastan “Idegey”

Valiullina F.

Resumo

Research on the Epic of Edigey in Türkiye

Kemaloğlu İ.

Resumo

Objective: The aim of the research is to reveal the history of studies in Turkey on the Edigey Epic, one of the most important epics in the Turkish world, to introduce the published copies of the Edigey Epic, and to determine from which perspectives the epic was researched and what kind of conclusions were reached. Research materials: The source of the study consists of copies of the epic published in Turkey, master’s and doctoral theses on the epic, and articles published in various scientific journals in Turkey on the subject.

Results and novelty of the research: As a result of the research, it was determined that the Tatar, Bashkir, Nogay, and Kazakh versions of the epic were published in Turkey, two master’s and two doctoral theses were written on the Edigey Epic, and dozens of articles were written. Although the different versions of the Edigey Epic published in Turkey are attributed to different nations, in fact the subjects and heroes of all these publications are the same, and we see the differences only in the motives and cultural characteristics specific to these respective nations. As in many other fields, Tatar intellectuals were the first to research the epic in Turkey. On the other hand, articles written about the epic examine it in terms of history, literature, and language. These studies mostly attempt to reveal how the epic deals with the image of Edigey and Timur, the theme of homeland, weapons, steppe and steppe culture, birth-wedding-death, etc. In addition, some articles examine topics such as supernatural powers, mythological motives, and the functions of animals in the epic.

Nogai version of the epic “Edige”: a review of versions and a history of study

Zakirova I.

Resumo

Purpose of the study: This work is aimed at reviewing and systematizing variants of the Nogai version of the epic “Edige”, introducing unexplored variants into scientific circulation, and compiling a complete list of existing texts.

Research materials: Nogai versions of the epic “Edige”. Along with well-known texts, variants published in pre-revolutionary periodicals have been introduced into scientific circulation.

The results of the study and its scientific novelty: The present work proves that the Nogai versions of the dastan about Edigei are numerous, but have not yet become the object of a specialized monographic study. Before the revolution, the variants were recorded and published in Russian translation by domestic researchers. The only pre-revolutionary version in the Nogai language was published by M. Osmanov. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that a review of all known options and a comparative analysis of individual episodes and motives was carried out. Variants that have not been studied by Nogai scientists have been identified. The hitherto unexplored version of A.P. Kulebyakin has been introduced into scientific circulation; it can rightfully be called the first consolidated text of the epic. Among other things, the relationship of some texts to the Nogai version is disputed.

The Nogai variants differ in the names of the characters and have original motives, yet the originality of the motives is not stemming from a national standpoint but mainly local in nature. The Nogai, Crimean Tatar variants, and the Astrakhan Tatar variants are close to each other in plot.

Pavel Falev and his “Nogai Legend of Idegey” (on the history of the epos study)

Anikeeva T.

Resumo

Research objectives: This article is the publication of a fragment of an unpublished study by Pavel Alexandrovich Falev (1888–1922), “The Nogai Legend of Idegey”, dedicated to the epic of Idegey, as well as a brief overview of the study and collection of various Turkic versions of the epic (primarily in the Tatar language).

Research materials: Pavel Falev's unpublished work is kept as a manuscript in the Archive of Orientalists of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg and consists of 16 copybooks which are of considerable interest to researchers, both turkologists and folklorists. It represents a certain stage in the field of study regarding Turkic epic in general and the epic of Idegey in particular, and, of course, needs a annotated publication. The main feature of this work is, first of all, that Pavel Falev considers all versions of the Turkic legend of Idegey known to him at that time.

Results and novelty of the research: The archive of Pavel A. Falev has already attracted the attention of researchers, but not by itself and only in connection with the research works of other Turkologists. In Falev’s text there is furthermore an overview of the versions of the epics known to the author, and the need to study and collect various versions of the legend of Idegey is quite clearly stated – only this, according to Pavel Falev, would allow for recreating the full picture of its distribution.

“Edige” is the undying spiritual heritage of the Karakalpak people

Aytmuratov J.

Resumo

The aim of the research is to study the role of researchers in the process of studying and widely popularizing the dastan of “Edige” among the Karakalpak people, as well as to analyze its significance as an important element of spiritual heritage.

Research materials: The basis of the research is a variety of Karakalpak variants of the dastan of “Edige”, as well as scientific works by both Russian and Karakalpak researchers devoted to this work. Special attention is paid to the variant of the dastan recorded from the words of Erpolat zhyrau, one which stands out for its depth and brightness in the ideological images of the heroes.

The scientific novelty of this research lies in a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the images of the heroes of the Karakalpak dastan of “Edige” with historical events, something which allows us to identify the deep cultural and historical roots of this work. Unlike existing studies, the emphasis in this work is on the predominant influence of the worldview of the Karakalpak people on the image of heroes, expressed through the prism of zhyrau's creativity. In addition, the research focuses on a unique version of the dastan of “Edige”, presented in the Karakalpak tradition, which reflects the memories of the population of the Southern Aral Sea region and their longing for the banks of the Volga and Yaik rivers.

Results of the research: this study confirms the importance of the dastan of “Edige” as a piece of the inextinguishable cultural heritage of the Karakalpak people. During the analysis, the following key conclusions were reached: The images of the heroes of the dastan of “Edige” are closely related to historical events, which allows a deeper understanding of the cultural and social contexts in which this folklore epic was formed. The research showed that the worldview of the Karakalpak people significantly affects the image of heroes, expressed in their moral and ethical qualities, as well as in their actions which reflected the values and ideals of their society.

On the study of the Uzbek version of the dastan “Idegey”

Eshchanova G.

Resumo

Purpose of the research: To present the study of the Uzbek version of the dastan “Idegey”.

Research materials: Uzbek versions of the epic “Idegey” and archival materials. The scientific novelty of the study: The Uzbek version of the epic “Idegey” were studied in a comparative approach. For the first time, archival records of the epic with live performances in the epic tradition were analyzed and comparatively studied. Important theoretical conclusions were made regarding the study of the epic.

Results of the study and its scientific novelty: The article proved that variants and versions of the epic about Idegey are widespread in Central Asia among Uzbeks, Karakalpaks, Kazakhs, especially in Khiva City, Khiva District and Khanka District, Nukus City, and the Chimboy District of the Khorezm oasis.

The work compares the versions recorded by researchers A. Belyaev, Erpolat zhyrau, and Kiyos zhyrau, demonstrating how the differences in their interpretation reflect the peculiarities of the epic tradition of each respective people. The conclusions of the study emphasize the richness of the language, artistic expressiveness, and historical significance of the epic. The work contributes to the study of the folklore of the Turkic peoples, highlighting the relationship between oral tradition and written sources. It is scientifically substantiated that the Kiyos zhyrau version is the richest in linguistic composition, the most beautiful in artistic coloring, and in the excellent description of traditions associated with ancient life, even acquiring historicity. In this version, an individual strong improvisational quality is manifested in the performance of the epic “Idegey”, thus manifesting all the talent and ability of Kiyos zhyrau.

The History of Creation and Promotion of the First Consolidated Text of the Bashkir Folk Epic “Idukai and Muradim”

Khabutdinova M.

Resumo

Research objectives: The purpose of the study is to restore the chronicle in the work of the Tatar scholar-encyclopedist, Naki Isanbet (1899–1992), pertaining to the creation and promotion of the consolidated text of the Bashkir folk epic, “Idukai and Muradim”. The research material was based on personal sources: memoirs, correspondence of a folklorist, a summary text of the 1933 edition with author's notes for translators. In the second half of 1920s to the first half of 1930s, Naki Isanbet participated in the first academic project in Russian history to collect, study, and create critical texts of epics of the peoples of the USSR, headed by scientists of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The Tatar scientist is rightfully considered a pioneer in this field. Naki Isanbet's textual works on the epic, “Idegey”, have been recognized not only within the USSR, but also abroad.

Research materials: The comprehensive text of the “Idukai and Muradim” epic by Naki Isanbet (1933); sources of a personal nature: memoirs, correspondence with a folklorist, etc. The research was conducted using cultural-historical, comparative, and descriptive methods.

Novelty of the research: The novelty of our research is found in its comprehensive study of the creative history of the textual work on the “Idukai and Muradim” Bashkir epic, providing the first summary text and the history of this epic’s development.

Results of the research: The scientific and historical value of this source has been determined within the framework of the study. The objective and subjective reasons for the dramatic fate of the consolidated text of the Bashkir version of the epic about Idegey are revealed. The structure of the handwritten text in Latin is described. Its plot and compositional features, character system, and artistic features are briefly described. It is demonstrated that Naki Isanbet was the first compiler of the consolidated text of the Bashkir folk epic, “Idukai and Muradim”. A comparative analysis of the editions of the consolidated text of 1928 and 1933 indicates that there was a “general constructive premeditation” aimed at actively influencing the reader, following the established genre and stylistic canon, as was noted by the textu7al critic. The history of Naki Isanbet’s cooperation with the Academia publishing house eliminates not only one of the “blind spots” in the history of the existence of this consolidated text, but also indirectly characterizes the circle of collaborative contacts of the Tatar scientist with Russian folklorists in 1930.
