Perceptual Image of Speech Consonance in British English Conversation

Abdullina R.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to establish the perception of melodic attunement in speech interaction and its acoustic correlation. The experimental corpus for the study includes conversations in British English obtained from podcasts. The results of auditory and acoustic analyses make it possible to identify perceptual features of melodic consonance in speech and establish their characteristics at the acoustic level. Coordinated interaction between interlocutors manifests itself in prosodic convergence and imitation of melodic and dynamic parameters of speech.

Cancel Culture Discourse and Axiology: How and Why Mass Media Verbalize Values

Arakelova A., Shiryaeva T.

Abstract

Cancel culture generates diverse communication and is grounded in the value systems accepted by society. To conduct a study of the written discourse of cancel culture, we have compiled a corpus of 40 articles published between 2019 and 2023. The aim of the study, conducted at the intersection of axiolinguistics and critical discourse analysis and with the help of corpus linguistics methods, was to form the axiological sphere of the discourse of cancel culture. As a result, 10 value concepts were identified: “Power”, “Freedom of Speech”, “Accountability”, “Ideas”, “Change”, “Unity”, “Social Justice”, “Voice”, “Respect”, “Inclusivity”. These value concepts are embodied through specific lexical-grammatical linguistic means and reflect the most important orientations, trends, and norms of Western society.

Rhoticity Revisited

Elena B.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to outline the basic state-of-the-art information about the status of such a sociolinguistic variable as rhotacism in the diversity of Englishes. Both diachronic and synchronic analyses of the problem are provided. The topicality of the problem lies in the necessity of choosing the type of pronunciation in terms of “rhoticity-nonrhoticity” in teaching English. In the Inner-circle countries the degree of rhoticity depends on the history of the language development, on the speakers’ age, gender, socio-economic status. In the Outer circle countries it depends on the substrate language influence, the norm orientation of mass media and education, the government policy, on mixed marriages. It is important to note that rhoticity in Great Britain and in the United States develops in opposite directions.

Discursive Features and Suprasegmental Characteristics of Conflict Communication

Demina M.

Abstract

This study aims at identifying discursive practices and intonation characteristics indicating conflict communicative behavior. A detailed phonopragmatic analysis of the English-language conversational podcast made it possible to trace the dynamics of ideological communicative confrontation. The results of the study indicate that the communicative conflict is realized in female and male speech differently, affecting discursive features and intonational characteristics of speech. The suprasegmental design of utterances can also indicate hidden aggression and hostility of communicants, which are not explicitly reflected in the verbal component of their interaction.

Voice Quality as a Sociophonetic Variable in American and British Linguocultural Context

Kartashevskaya Y.

Abstract

The paper presents the experimental data on non-modal (creaky) phonation viewed as a marker of social variation in English. The objective of the research is to analyse sociophonetic functions of creaky phonation and to collect data on the perceptual and acoustic features of this type of nonmodal phonation. The research is based on voice samples of young British and American female speakers (n=6). Methods used in the research are: perceptual, acoustic and comparative analyses. Fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer and harmonics-to-noise ratio data revealed creaky phonation correlates at the acoustic level. The results demonstrate the highest frequency of creaky phonation occurrence in American female speech.

Narration in Law Discourse: How Attorneys Gesture When Changing Voices in Opening Statements

Leonteva A., Agafonova O.

Abstract

This research examines how attorneys employ verbal and nonverbal communication means in their opening statements during trials, with a particular focus on how they use voices. Opening statement presents the stances of both the prosecution and defense teams, often incorporating various voices – such as those of witnesses, victims, experts and defendants – to bolster credibility and elicit emotional responses from jurors. By conducting a multimodal analysis of speech patterns and co-speech gestures in two high-profile criminal cases, the study uncovers several distinctions in the use of direct and indirect speech. The results indicate that the incorporation of gestures not only supports spoken narratives but also assists jurors in grasping complex scenarios.

Rising Tone Realization in Native and Nonnative Speech

Sukhova N.

Abstract

The present study aims at analyzing the cross-linguistic influence of the rising tone realization in native and nonnative speech in the tone placement in the phrase and its pitch contour configuration. The comparative and speech acoustic analyses were employed. The material consists of the speech recordings provided by the Russian- and English-speaking respondents. The findings evidence the cross-linguistic influence of the rising tone realization. It is manifested in the converging phrase illocutionary force and the tonal meaning. The nonnative speech pitch contour has its own parameters rather than being an echo of the native contour.

Phrase and Pause Lengths in the Context of Proxemics in English and American Cinematic Discourse

Tsibulya N.

Abstract

The aim of the present study is, on the basis of E. Hall’s classification, to define the interaction proxemic zone of cinematic discourse characters, describe their relationship, and reveal correlation between phrase and internal pause lengths. The experiment employs such methods as complex perceptual analysis, method of acoustic analysis, elements of quantitative research method, and comparative analysis of prosodic parameters of the characters’ speech. The research is based on English and American cinematic discourse. As a result, differences in the lengths of phrase and pause ratio are observed. In both discourses, a tendency for longer pausing time in men’s speech is revealed. On the other hand, pausation time increases in American discourse, as compared to English one.

English Word Stress in the Rhythmical Context of Australian and New Zealand Speech

Shevchenko T., Borzykh A.

Abstract

The paper reports on the new results of corpora analysis of stress in polysyllabic words based on the speech of Australian and New Zealand residents. The aim of the study is twofold: to explore specific features of rhythm in either country and to compare actual realizations of word stress patterns with dictionaries’ data. Australian English demonstrates features of syllable-based rhythm due to the speakers’ habit of prolonging unstressed syllables; New Zealand rhythm is faster and accent-based. In reading most of the patterns in both countries are British-oriented; the presence of secondary stresses which were found in reading by perceptual acoustic method is not consistently reflected in the Australian dictionary.

Interpretation in Literature: Hermeneutic Analysis of Stories by Two Authors

Kosichenko E., Kosteva V.

Abstract

The article looks into the problem of literary value of a piece of writing which is a version of a previously written story by another writer. Research relies on hermeneutic approach and methods of intertextual, structural, linguo-stylistic, philological analysis and interpretation, that serve to describe the role of intertextuality as the main principle of composing the later story, to reveal the structural, linguistic and stylistic properties of both stories, to expose the influence of the cultural and historical context, to consider the later story in terms of its literary value. It is concluded that, being stylistically different, the later story interprets the earlier one by reconstructing the situation in a new cultural context thus conveying the idea of recurrence of life.
